| Nov 12, 2008 by LISA WEBER |

The 42-year old mom to daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault born in 2007, told Style magazine that she can't stop breastfeeding.
"I'm like an alcoholic. It is like, I don't care if I cry, I don't care if I am fat, I am just going to do it for one more week, one more month, and then when I see how much good it is doing her and I can't stop."

I'm only a college kid with no children but is that normal? I know she's maybe 13-14 months, but don't most mothers stop around 8-9 months?
It's an individual thing. I suspect different cultures do it longer. But she may change her tune if Valentina with her sharp little teeth gives her a good bite. It has happened before.
It's normal for some people. Some bf for just a few months, some for a few years, some not at all. However I think party of the reason she is so addicted is because of the weight loss benefits. Breastfeeding does NOT make you fat...it helps you lose weight! Who wouldn't be addicted to that?
Some stop breastfeeding when the child is around 8-9 months, some do later. Sometimes the baby is very demanding and moms keep on breastfeeding infrequently until 18 months or so. :) Mother's milk is the best you can do for your baby, so there's nothing wrong with it (even though I prefer a breast-pump + bottle, it doesn't animate others to put their two cents in breastfeeding an "older" child and it helps to cut the child's mental connexion between breast and milk).
But still you have to stop someday, and it may be difficult for some moms to draw the line. It's mostly an intergradation and the children stop wanting to be breastfed spontaneously.
@Anon, in some cultures breastfeeding goes until toddler years 2-3 years old (one of the women I know breastfed her kid til he was 32 months). But I just saw this documentary in you tube about an english woman who still breastfeeds her daughter who is NOW 8 years old! She even showed it on camera!! that to me is a little freaky..
luckily, it's up to every women to decide when and if she breastfeeds, and for how long. it doesn't really matter what 'culture' dictates. it's what is the norm in your own house. my first daughter BF 'til 14 months and my second daughter 'til 2 years. this isn't something i broadcasted to the world, mind you, it was our own personal thing. and once your child is over a year then it's usually only once or twice a day (i.e. first thing in the morning and last thing before bed). like i said, it's a personal decision and one shouldn't comment on it being normal or abnormal. good for her that she loves that bond with her daughter. it's great to see a celebrity breastfeeding and especially extended breastfeeding b/c then we at least know the mother is spending lots and lots of time with their child.
