Brooke Shields & Daughters Cover Cookie Magazine

Brooke Shields is a mother to two daughters, 5-year-old Rowan and 2 1/2-year-old Grier – and she says that becoming a mother is what made her finally feel normal.

Brooke attended the weekly Wednesday-morning service at the Manhattan school where Rowan goes to kindergarten,

“I watched the children file in quietly. I was in a seat another mom had saved for me—like in high school!—and Rowan’s eyes lit up when she saw me sneaking a wave. She kept checking for me. I was just another mom sharing the experience, and I thought, Wow, it took having a child for me to feel like I belong, that I’m normal. It was pretty profound.”

Currently, Brooke is starring as Wendy Healy, a woman trying to juggle a movie-producing career, a marriage, and two kids. (While there have been rumors of the show’s cancellation, Brooke has denied them as has the studio.) Her schedule is hectic, with 14-hour shooting days in New York City, including nights and weekends; husband Chris Henchy works in Los Angeles, and the family reunited every other weekend.

With so much going on all the time, Brooke says her favorite thing to do is just sink into the background and be a mom to her daughters. “I’m a larger-than-life thing. I’m the reason the paparazzi take their pictures. When my girls are on their own, and their little personalities come out, I feel so good.”

Brooke’s relationship with her own mother was famously intense and tumultuous. “I feel like there’s a reason I had girls. My mom and I were very, very, very close, but we had no separation. My daughters are teaching me that it’s okay to have boundaries, that they want them.”

Brooke also explains that good manners are important in her house – even for those who don’t live there! Stating that “there are so few children I like,” she explains, “If you’re not polite, you can’t come to my house. Manners [represent] respect and kindness. I want people to like my kids, and if they’re bratty, they’ll have a harder time in life.”

But always, the most important thing in her life is being a parent. “Once you love someone that much, you think, God, why did I do this to myself? It’s so heart-wrenching! And then you realize: It’s so heart-wrenching. That’s why I did it to myself.”

I completely agree about the manners thing. It’s something my mother always was very strict about, making sure my brother and I had good manners and I think it’s very important for children to be polite and respectful.

  2. My mom was the same way – you always say please and thank you whenever someone does anything for you, even if it’s a little thing.
