Candy Spelling Misses Stella's 1st Birthday Party

There may have been 100 guests in attendance at Stella McDermott's 1st birthday bash this past weekend, but the post-party talk has focused on one person who was noticeably missing: Stella's grandmother Candy Spelling.

Despite her rocky relationship with daughter Tori, Candy confirms that she was in fact invited to the party, and that she RSVP'd that she'd be there. She had a change of heart when she realized that the event would be filmed for Tori and her husband Dean McDermott's reality show.

A rep for Candy - who has yet to meet her 1-year-old granddaughter - explains her decision not to attend.

“Candy was so excited to be invited to the party, but then she found out it wasn't to be at Tori's home, but at a house rented by the production. So it was clear it was for Tori's show.

“Candy agonised over whether to go or not. Candy felt like she had to say, 'No.’ She wrote to her daughter that she wanted to do something privately with Tori and her family.”

What do you think of Candy's decision?

Oh good grief, Candy! Get over yourself!!

She should have gone because Tori said she could be left out of the filming. It would have been a good venue for Candy to be with Tori and family on such a happy occasion. Just family and her might be a little tense.

Unbelievable! never seen anyone who are so addicted to air their dirty laundry in public like these people. Wish they all mature up and behave like adults!!

Didn't take Candy long to realize Tori was simply using her appearance for ratings.

Unbelievable! I couldn't imagine having that kind of relationship with my mom.

Candy was lucky she was even invited.

I think candy missed her opportunity to meet her granddaughter.

I wouldn't have gone either. At a huge party with over 100 people, she may very well have felt completely out of place having not been in the family for so long. On top of that Tori is hosting a party, do you really think there would have been a nice sit down reunion especially with any cameras anywhere? I don't. If Tori is really serious then the invitation should still stand and they should work something out later.

I don't care for either one but I feel bad for Tori. I think Candy is just as much of an attention seeker as her daughter. Know wonder Tori is the way she is.

OK, mother and daughter are both hopeless. But on a purely common sense etiquette basis: (1) you don't try to engineer meet-the-grandchildren with an estranged family member at a giant party (even at your own home, unfilmed); (2) if Tori's motives were sincere and not something ulterior (even if only "testing" her mother, to say nothing of the filming), it would've been nice (i.e., adult, healthy) if she had personally extended the invitation, or personally followed up on the invite. You don't need a Total Reconciliation prerequisite to do that. If Tori genuinely wants her mother to spend some teeny time w/ the children, you'd think it would be private and unpublicized (but no Spelling -- any of 'em, not even the dear departed -- has ever understood the concept of scale!). On the other hand, I can't imagine welcoming someone into my family who had recently accused me of "killing" my father -- so maybe Tori set this up for Candy to "fail" quite publicly. So we end where we began ... they're hopeless!

Candy has been saying how she hasnt met Stella yet and now she gets the opportunity and she turns it down.

i agree with candy's decision. as much as i loove the show, i would've declined if i knew the cameras were there too! they might have been just for ratings. they both do nothing but talk crap about each other and maybe they were both wrong.

Why on Earth could anyone think such negative thoughts about a childs' birthday. Be there or be square (That's final!)

Candy Spelling exemplifies that wisdom does not always come with age:(

As much as I love this family and this show, I am calling it now. These are the next John & Kate. Money does horrible things to people.

I love Tori and Dean and do feel for Tori's situation with her Candy. However, I would not have attended the party if I were Candy either. They need to meet privately. Tori should invite her over for a family ONLY b-day celebration for little Stella. Let her meet her grandmother for the first time in private - not with 100 people watching and the cameras rolling.

I wish this whole family would go away and leave us all alone. Just because they're rich doesn't mean I need to know about their drama.

Tori is a bigger person than I am.. I wouldn't have asked her in the first place!

wow what a ......... (fill in the blank with what ever you think of) how can you miss your grandchilds birthday party who cares if it was being filmed on tv or not and if she wanted something private then she should have said something before she RSVPd! She needs to realize that the world doesnt revolve around her and that lifes too short to be constantly arguing and such with family

Stop dishing On Tori, Candy was invited and should have gone. Tori is agreat mother and Tori needs to cut ties from her mother. She has a wonderful extended family with Bill and Scout, and deans family forget about Candy Spelling and maybe Candy should not have written an open letter to Tori, Candy started it and should have went to stella's party!!!
