I am not really a recipe girl as I like to venture off and do my own thing in the kitchen, but when I was given a copy of Jessica Seinfeld’s cookbook, Deceptively Delicious, I was pleasantly surprised at how clever and seemingly yummy the recipes were. There is some controversy surrounding the book, as a lawsuit is currently underway wherein Seinfeld is being accused of plagiarism, but controversy aside, this is a great book filled with easy recipes that are perfect even for those lucky parents that have children who actually eat their veggies!
The recipes are mainly classics such as Macaroni and Cheese, Chicken Nuggets and Meatloaf with a healthy twist that doesn’t compromise flavor as they incorporate pureed vegetables into the meal. There are recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and even dessert! Parents who make their own baby food will benefit even more, as you may already have a stock of purees in the freezer. The recipes are basic, simple, and use ingredients that you probably already have on hand or would easily be able to find in your local grocery store, and for cooks such as myself, you can easily veer off the path of the recipe and improvise by switching up some of the ingredients as you go.
Overall, this book is a great resource for anyone that has to cook for little ones, or for older kids or adults that are picky! I can say for certain, that I have tried many of the Deceptively Delicious recipes and they have all been a hit in my home. The book also doubles as a baby food cookbook as there are recipes to make the purees which are essentially baby food. Author Jessica Seinfeld, (wife of Jerry Seinfeld and mom of three,) made this book unique by creating a nostalgic 50’s style theme that carries throughout the book and also includes personal notes and tips on some of the recipes. Deceptively Delicious would make a perfect addition to any cookbook collection, and would be a great anytime gift for a parent that does all the cooking!
