Model Mom Karen Duffy Is A "Late Bloomer"

Model and TV star Karen Duffy says she feels as though she's grown old three times over: Once when she landed a gig as an MTV VJ when she was well into her (gasp!) twenties; again when she was diagnosed with sarcoidosis of the central nervous system in her thirties; and most recently when she became a mom in her forties to her son Jack, who is now 5.

Karen tells of her late entry into motherhood in an essay featured in the new issue of Cookie magazine, recalling, "My friends teased me that I could shop for his diapers and check out the Depends for myself."

Now 47, Karen may not be thrilled at her status as the oldest mom in Jack's kindergarten class, but she reminds herself that she has plenty of company in the ranks of "late bloomer" moms.

"Elizabeth Adeney just became Britain's oldest new mother when she gave birth at age 66. And she will be 71 when her kid starts kindergarten," she writes. "Maybe we late bloomers are just the people who never give up trying for what we really want out of life."

How old were you when you became a mom?

I'm not a mom yet, and I'll be 30 (gasp squared!) next month. I don't have a partner or anything, nor am I ready to be a single parent. So, if I ever have kids, I'll be... older than 30.

I get the feeling, though, that I'll be a late bloomer.

I was 34, wish I started earlier, but really no regrets.
