Tobey Maguire's Very Veggie Cause

Tobey Maguire's Very Veggie Cause

Dad-of-two Tobey Maguire wants kids across the nation to eat their vegetables.

The Spiderman star recently penned letters to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Tom Harkin asking that the 2009 reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act include a provision for a daily vegetarian option in schools, saying it would “go a long way toward reducing the amount of fat, calories and cholesterol students get.”

“As a parent, I am contacting you because I am deeply concerned that unhealthy school lunches are contributing to our nation’s childhood obesity epidemic. School is tough enough already – students shouldn’t have to put up with lunches swimming in fat and cholesterol,” Tobey writes. “My wife and I just had our second child, so this issue is tremendously important to us…. Let me ask you please to ensure the Child Nutrition Act provides more fruits, vegetables, and healthy vegetarian foods.”

Tobey and his wife Jennifer Meyer are parents to kids Ruby Sweetheart, 3, and Otis Tobias, 2 months.

What do you think of Tobey’s vegetarian plea?

As a vegetarian myself, I think this is a great idea. Kids are so fat nowadays and will develop chronic health problems if they continue on this junk food/fast food track. They should be taught about vegetarian alternatives and shown how delicious and how much more healthy they are for them.

I also agree that it's a great idea! I am not a vegetarian myself but I do limit meat, having it only 2 times a week for health reasons. As a teacher, I really wish that schools would offer healthier choices for students. I love that he's speaking out about this!

School lunches need more healthy options including veggies, fruits and grains, but it shouldn't rule out lean meat or meat prepared in a healthy way. Meat does not always constitute junk food. One doesn't have to be vegan/veg. to be healthy. Moderation makes a difference.

I think its great that he is supporting this! Having healthy options is really important for students. Having a healthy veg alternative at least gives kids the opportunity to make a healthy choice. We could all benefit from cutting the cholesterol and saturated fat from our diets.
