It’s been a long and difficult road to motherhood for The Young & the Restless star Michelle Stafford, but she’s now thrilled to announce that she’s expecting her first child – a girl! – later this year.
The Emmy-award winning actress, who turns 44 next week, tells People, “After a three-year journey through hell, I’m elated, ecstatic and feel ultimately lucky to be able to announce I’m expecting my own child via surrogate in December.”
Michelle, who plays the feisty Phyllis Newman to perfection on the long-running soap, reveals that she tried artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and considered adoption in her quest to become a mom. After multiple failed surgeries and egg retrievals, she went the surrogacy route. She describes the process as “the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
Currently single, Michelle says that going through this struggle on her own “made me realize the importance and reason for a partner,” though she admits she’s unsure about hitting the dating scene with a baby on the way!
“Dating men and telling them I’m expecting in December is a little different. I know I just need to find someone who wants the same things as I do.”
Congratulations to Michelle on the happy news!

“Hitting the dating scene with her baby bump?!”
Me too, milla, it’s my guilty pleasure!
Michelle is so good on the show.
ps – I re-worded to avoid confusion… thanks!
I only watch Y&R maybe a couple of times a month, but enough to have seen what a quality actress she is. What she’s doing is very brave (esp. what she *has* been doing, bless her – SO difficult). All good wishes!!
wow umm she said that meaning telling men she was having a baby via surrogiate. learn to read please. very happy for her! i love y&r.
I wish only the best to Michelle with her new baby! As far as Y & R I think she is a great actress but I still would like Nick and Sharon to get back together…I think they are the perfect couple, always have.
