A seasoned entertainment news journalist and two-time Emmy-nominated TV personality, Samantha Harris is a celeb mom we love to watch. Best-known for co-hosting the hit ABC series Dancing With The Stars, Samantha is also a regular correspondent on The Insider. Samantha – who is mom to 2-year-old daughter Josselyn – opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her busy life and how she deals with mommy guilt, how she always makes time for exercise and her best advice for busy working moms.
CBS: You are mom to 2-year-old daughter Josselyn and you co-host one of the most popular TV shows, Dancing with the Stars. Not to mention your correspondent and fill-in anchor gig on The Insider. How do you do it all?
SH: “Like any working mom, it’s a daily juggle. Lots of balls in the air and you try really hard not to drop any. My daily organizer is my bible. Everything has a time slot. It doesn’t always go smoothly like clockwork but, at least, most things get done. I definitely put myself in last position on the list of priorities. The one thing I do try to do for myself and my sanity is get in some form of exercise 3-4 days a week (more if I can!).”
CBS: What is your best advice for working moms who suffer from mommy guilt?
SH: “We all can commiserate! It’s one of the most difficult inner struggles. I try to remind myself of what a great example working and striving sets for our daughter. To see both her parents out there accomplishing goals on a daily basis is a good thing!”
CBS: What is it like hosting DWTS? It seems so high-paced and energetic.
SH: “Hosting DWTS is a dream come true and a thrill ride every night. Between being live on that show and then the other days of the week debating the days most-talked about entertainment news stories on The Insider, I feel very professionally fulfilled, too.”
CBS: And not to mention the sexual tension between some of the dancers and their celeb partners! Or is it just us?
SH: “How can there NOT be?! Two hot young single people spending oodles of time together body to body in a confined space … Sparks are bound to fly!”
CBS: You look like you could be a dancer! Have you ever danced with any of the pros?
SH: “Thank you! Actually, season 2 I got to dance the Jive with pro Jonathan Roberts on our results show. Maks and Derek have dipped me a few times back stage for fun, too. Then this summer I made my Broadway debut in Chicago dancing and singing in the role of Roxie! A true dream from when I was in junior high.”
CBS: How do you stay in such great shape?
SH: “Exercise for me is a way of life. It is my saving grace within a hectic work schedule. My mind is so much clearer when I have had even 30 minutes of cardio. I love free weights as well and like to take classes that make use of them. It’s also about nutrition as well, though. I try to make good choices on a daily basis and eat a balance of carbs, fat and protein every 3-4 hours whenever I can. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a huge sweet tooth, too. I indulge a little every night.”
You always wear such gorgeous gowns on DWTS. Do you ever have any say in the wardrobe?
SH: “Thankfully I always have complete creative input in what is a collaborative process between me and my stylist, Kit Scarbo. She is amazingly talented and has wonderful relationships with designers and jewelers so that they loan a lot of the gowns and every piece of jewelry I wear is real! Sadly the stage coach turns back into a pumpkin after each DWTS taping.”
CBS: Do you get to keep any of the gowns?
SH: “Some of the designers have been generous enough to gift a couple of gowns over the seasons to me!”
Do you enjoy playing dress up and does Josselyn ever come on the set and play dress up with you?
SH: “It’s every little girl’s fantasy to be done up like a princess and I love it still. Josselyn loves coming to mommy’s “dance show”. She watches rehearsals and then when the dancing ends, she says ‘more dances!'”
CBS: Do you and co-host Tom Bergeron know the results before you read them to the audience on DWTS?
SH: “Some shows earlier in the season we do, but I usually only allow myself to know the bottom two so that it’s still a surprise when I hear the voted-off couple’s names in my ear piece.”
CBS: Have you two ever placed bets on who will win?
SH: “He’s never asked and I’m not a betting person.”
CBS: You returned to DWTS in less than a month after having Josselyn. How did you manage that? Is that time all just a blur?
SH: “I thankfully had a great pregnancy and a great fast recovery (after 2 agonizing weeks). However, it was really hard to leave her for those 2 days a week.”
CBS: What is Josselyn into these days? What does she do to make you laugh?
SH: “Everything she does makes me laugh and she’s talking up a storm!”
CBS: You have a degree in journalism. Is this where you visualized your career when you were a university student? What led you to where you are now?
SH: “Absolutely! I interned at Entertainment Tonight after my sophomore year at Northwestern. It’s come full circle now that I’ve been co-hosting ET’s weekend show.”
CBS: If you are working on any other projects or with any charities, please feel free to discuss.
SH: “I’ve been working as a member of the Entertainment Council of Feeding America, the nation’s leading hunger relief organization. I hope people can check out feedingamerica.org!
My other biggest project right now is moving into a house closer to work and having to childproof all over again! Thankfully I found a wonderful company who has worked with a lot of people in Hollywood called Safety1stSquad. They know their stuff!”
