New mom Jennifer Hudson is gearing up to celebrate her first holiday season with her favourite new man – her 4-month-old son, David Daniel Otunga Jr.
“I need to make it great for him,” the 28-year-old Dreamgirls star tells PEOPLE. “I just want to make it as exciting and fun for him and it was for me. And I want him to have this feeling each time this time of year come around. Whatever that is, that’s what I want to make my tradition.”
Recently, the proud new mother and self-proclaimed “holiday fanatic” recently appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and gushed about getting ready for her son’s first Christmas: “I’m going to go crazy,” she told Oprah. “He’s very aware, but he’s so young and it’s his first Christmas, so you have to go all-out.”
For Jennifer, Christmas is all about spreading joy and celebrating with loved ones:
It hurts me so when I see people like, ‘Whatever, Christmas is just another day’. I’m that person who’s going to go over there and get you into the holiday spirit. And that’s how I’ve always been.
This year, to help spread that cheer, she is hosting her very first TV holiday special, Jennifer Hudson: I’ll Be Home for Christmas, featuring musical guests, former teachers, friends and glimpses into her childhood, including the church where her love for music began, singing in the choir. The special will be shot on location in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
“The first thing you do for the holidays is go back home, so I went back home, and the next thing you do is spend it with all of your family and your friends in those familiar places,” she explains. “That’s why I chose to go back home and share it and make it personal.”
As busy as her holidays will be this year, there’s one part of the festivities that she won’t be taking on – Christmas dinner!
“I learned my lesson from Thanksgiving,” she reminisced. “I bit off far more than I could chew trying to cook because I am not a cook!”
