This weekend the dresses will be donned, the hair will be done and the sitters will be called. Hollywood moms will be getting dolled up and hitting the red carpet for the 2010 Academy Awards! And some will be seating on the edge of their seats, and not due to their gown choice, but because they are up for winning their very own Oscar! Here are five working moms who are up for this very important award.
Actress in a Leading Role:
Does she need any more accolades, acclaim and awards? Meryl Streep is considered a national treasure and has been nominated for a stunning amount of Oscars…16 to be precise (along with 25 Golden Globe nominations!). She holds the record for the most Oscar nominations of any actor, now that’s talent! She’s won two Academy Awards for her work in Sophie’s Choice and Kramer vs. Kramer. This time she is up for her role as Julia Childs in Julie and Julia.
This is the first time Sandra has been up for an Oscar and it’s really the first time she gotten that kind of critical acclaim. And no, her role in Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous doesn’t count. She won the Golden Globe for her work in The Blind Side so she has a good chance, especially since she is so beloved by the Hollywood community. Sandra is an active step mom to hubby Jesse James’s five-year-old daughter Sunny (Jesse also has two children with his first wife).
Also up for the best actress award are: Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire) and Helen Mirren (The Last Station).
Actress in a Supporting Role:
Vera went back to work and tackled her role in Up In the Air just two weeks after having son Fynn. The actress gave into the pressure and opted to prove the naysayers wrong. But her acclaim for her role opposite George Clooney is ‘bittersweet’. She sadly said that “I could never reclaim these first precious moments of maternity. [But] I needed to pay my mortgage. It wasn’t an option. I had to do the role.” At least with that motherly sacrifice, some good came out of it!
Maggie Gyllenhaal – Trying to explain the concept that “mommy is up for an Oscar” is probably a tough one to translate to a three year old. But Maggie Gyllenhaal has given it a try. “I have explained some of it because she asked me the other day, ‘What’s Crazy Heart?’ Because people come up and say that they have seen it and that they like it.” And if she wins, explaining that Oscar is actually not a doll and a friend of Barbie’s might be even harder.
Mo’Nique is the front runner favorite in this category. Her emotional charged performance in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire earned her the Golden Globe, which is often used as a precursor to who will win the Oscar. Mo’Nique is a loving mom of three kids (two are twins) and usually spends her time on stage making people laugh in comedy clubs all over the county. This dramatic role as ‘vicious and abusive’ mom, was a departure to say the least.
Also up for an award for best supporting actress: Penélope Cruz (Nine) and Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air).
Do you think one of these moms will take home an Oscar?
