Permission Slips: Every Woman's Guide to Giving Herself a Break

Stand-up comedienne, actress and ABC's The View co-host Sherri Shepherd is hilarious, raw and incredibly honest in her autobiography Permission Slips. While sharing her struggles and triumphs, Sherri encourages women to give themselves "permission slips" when things don't go as planned. She writes about everything from that memorable second day on The View (and, yes she knows the earth is round!) to:

* Her early experiences with boys, dating and sex
* The ups and downs of her career on stage, screen and TV
* Marriage and infidelity
* Motherhood
* Diabetes and how it affected her family

One of my favorite permission slips from the book: "Write yourself a permission slip to hold firm on a gut feeling, even if someone else can explain it away."

I read this autobiography as soon as 2010 rolled around and as a mother found it very uplifting. Sherri's words and insight really speak to women in a way that makes you want to read on; she truly speaks from the heart and expands on so many issues and worries women have as a mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend. I sat on my couch nodding, laughing and sympathizing while flipping through the pages. At no point is this book dry or boring, in fact reading it is like having a chat with a good friend over a cup of coffee... maybe even better!
