Kirstie Alley Says Scientology Makes Parenting Easier

Former Cheers star Kirstie Alley is headed back to the small screen, only this time the mom-of-two will be playing herself. The 59-year-old actress - and her kids William, 17, and Lillie, 15 - are featured in the new A&E reality show Kristie's Big Life, which aims to document her struggle to slim down. Kristie recently chatted to Babble about her parenting philosophy, her famous friend John Travolta and her thoughts on Scientology.

On her biggest parenting challenges: "It hasn’t been particularly challenging. That’s probably where scientology helps a family, because as scientologists we’re taught that you are responsible for what’s going on in your life. And that’s great because kids - especially teenagers - have secrets that they don’t feel like they can tell you. In scientology, we learn to make a space safe for our kids to tell us anything so that the kid knows that he’s not going to get nailed when he tells you. If the kid doesn’t [feel safe], they’ll just draw away from you. So with my kids, sooner or later they’ll come to me and say, 'I smoked a cigarette or I did this…' And I have to bite my tongue and say, 'Okay, I’m glad you told me that' because I am. It keeps you close. So challenge-wise, sometimes my son is a little too brutally honest and it’s too much information, but I’d rather have that than the opposite."

On her parenting philosophy: "To do whatever I have to do to support my children. It’s 100% my responsibility to [release] them into the world with as much knowledge and survival tactics as I possibly can. Also - and maybe this came from being an older mother - just love them! No matter what they do, love them but don’t spoil them and make them into brats - that does them a great disservice. [My kids] aren’t going to be entitled or get anything they want in life; they’re going to earn it."

On whether her daughter feels pressure to be thin: "Being fat’s [not] her goal but being a [specific] weight isn’t her goal either. She’s pretty sane on the subject. Let’s ask her… Lillie, do you feel any pressure?" Lillie: "A little bit but it’s not something I pay attention to a lot. I can see that a lot of my friends do, but I don’t want to do that."

On her "husband" John Travolta: "John’s like he’s my husband, [especially] with financial affairs. He’ll call me out of the blue and say, 'How much do you have in your savings account? If you didn’t work for three years, what would you do?' He’s my sounding board."

On why Scientology is so often criticized: "The only thing that I can come up with is that it’s a new religion; it’s only been around since the fifties. I think people are curious. We think certain things are barbaric like lobotomy, electroshock, unnecessary drugging of people; we’re pretty outspoken about it. There’s a lot of money behind drug companies. But you’d never say, 'What religion is Jenny Craig?' Or J.Lo, who has a clothing line. 'Oh my god! This is a front for Catholics!'"

Kirstie Big Life premiered on A&E this week.

Kirstie would know everything about parenting. Her "assistant" has an assistant.

She's lucky Parker was gay and they adopted, so none of her "crazy" got into her kids.

Parker should have gone after full custody.

Weird, Kirstie knows fore well that the family unit us NOT part of what a scientologist strives for ultimately. Most scientologists don't know that our urge toward family is not a thetan (spiritual) urge, and such an urge (toward family et al) is counter-intention to scientology as a group.

the first mistake of defending your religion is to attack other's religion that's so sad, dirty and lack of inteligence. I'm Ok with most religions but i don't know why i just can't stand scientology

the really sad thing here is that what she's saying is, scientology teaches me that my kids are responsible for however they turn out and i have no control over it, so when my kid tells me he smokes or whatever he's doing, i can just shrug and say "well, that's your problem, kid". of COURSE being $ci makes parenting easier - you let them do whatever they want, and you take no responsibility for it. that's the easiest way to parent there is. also, duhhh, the worst.

Get those kids into into Scientology Auditing as early as possible and before you know it you've destroyed their critical thinking skills. Instant obedience.

They'll believe just about anything; like galactic overlords named Xenu and that L. Ron Hubbard was an honest man.

The great thing about this show is it will serve to bring the cult of scientology to the fore for more scrutiny.

Wouldn't watch it, the woman makes me cringe, but pretty sure scientology will be the main point of discussion around it. Every time Alley makes even the slightest remark about the wacky beliefs or the extremist agenda of world domination and total obliteration of psychiatry will be pure gold. I predict a veritable golden shower.

A reality show about a fat washed up sitcom "actress" trying to lose weight while marketing hard for a cult that destroys families for profit?

Oh, did I mention A&E is using sex to try to sell this very old battleax's show? I about vomited when I saw the ads.

If this show doesn't fail hard, I'm cancelling my cable service and throwing out my TV.

I find Kirstie's new reality show incredibly boring. I really liked the last show she did, it was a riot to watch.
It seems like she has made a whole name for herself by gaining and losing. She should either get serious or accept her curves.

Scientology is a cult. It is probably one of the worst things in this world that anybody could get involved in . . . Google Ex-Scientology kids

Kate Gosslin aka Mommy Dearest the 2nd, is useless as a mother and dancer. All that she really cares about is having her face splashed across the screen. She will manipulate anyone that she can--don't be fooled by those statements about her poor childred--she could care less. Just remember how she refusedto give water, how she had a sick child lay in the laudry room because she didnt' want the mess. Bring back some memories--u bet! Indian Dresses She's horrible! Put's Mommy Dearest in second place.

Wake up people and quit voting for this wanna be diva.

I really feel sorry for those kids--
