In addition to being an Academy Award winning actress and mother to six children, Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh, Pax, Knox and Vivienne, Angelina Jolie still finds time to travel the world and make it a better place as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations. Alongside partner Brad Pitt, Jolie has donated millions of dollars through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, to aid efforts including Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children. The couple also donated $1 million to humanitarian groups to benefit over 4 million people affected by the crisis in Darfur, and $100K to the American SOS Children’s Villages to aid those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. She explains,
SOS has been in Haiti for over three decades, now raising over 300 orphaned and abandoned children and caring for 4,000 more impoverished children and families to help prevent child abandonment.
Most impressively, Jolie gives the greatest gift of all, which is her time, presence and attention in person, by making frequent visits to poor and impoverished refugees and survivors of natural disasters.
Angelina Jolie helps prove that we can save the earth one person at a time, by helping those who are less fortunate and by shining attention on the communities and people who need a helping hand the most.
Jessica Alba‘s mission to go green starts at her Los Angeles home, which Latina Magazine dubs, “an eco-friendly paradise.” While her abode, shared with husband Cash Warren and daughter Honor, 2 next month, features avant-garde decor such as tennis ball rugs and trash cans made from potato chip wrappers, the heart of the intent behind Alba’s eco-friendly design scheme is her daughter, Honor. The actress told InStyle Magazine,
I would like to see a cleaner earth for my child.
Alba also dresses Honor in organic cotton clothing and makes certain that her nursery decor is non-toxic and sustainably crafted. She even makes sure that her rescue dogs lounge in an eco-friendly fashion by giving them Greener Pup dog beds made from recycled fabrics and stuffed with filling made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.
While Alba may not be partaking in global initiatives to go green, her simple steps to live an eco-friendly lifestyle are an inspiration to all parents. If everyone goes green in their own life, we could do a major overhaul on the health of the planet!
Pretty Woman Julia Roberts, who just landed at the top of the list of People Magazine’s World’s Most Beautiful People 2010 issue (this is her fourth appearance in this annual issue!), demonstrates the adage that pretty is as pretty does. The superstar lives an admirable green lifestyle in her sustainably designed home which is solar powered and built with woods from responsibly managed forests, and she helps spread the word about the importance of making eco-minded choices in interviews and by practicing what she preaches. She told Life & Style Magazine,
Motherhood is the big reason I started thinking more critically about the environment and global warming.
The 44 year-old mom to twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 5 and Henry, 2 1/2, her children with Danny Moder, told Vanity Fair magazine about greening her childrens’ diaper regime to result in less waste:
We make a lot of garbage. How can we make less garbage? This is our plight. I use Seventh Generation (chlorine-free, non-toxic) diapers for Finn and Hazel, and then I was turned on to the (plastic-free, flushable) gDiapers” for Henry. “It is flushable, but you’ve got to stir that thing! If you don’t really break it all the way up, it doesn’t go all the way down.
In addition to her efforts to leave a smaller footprint on the earth, Roberts totes her reusable canvas bags to all of her shopping excursions, uses only organic household cleaners, and reportedly cuts back on showering to help conserve water!
She’s also lucky enough to have kids who eat their veggies — straight from their own organic garden. Green Daily quotes Roberts as saying,
The children love it and I think it’s the best training for them. I think when children know their food sources they’re more inclined to eat what they’re growing because they’re so proud of it. To watch my kids eat kale is a pretty proud moment for me as a mom.
Rock star and mama to 2 1/2 year-old son, Wyatt, Sheryl Crow, was saving the earth through her actions long before she adopted her little boy, but the singer admits she’s taking her green ways up a notch saying, “I have a little boy now, so my concern is what kind of planet are we leaving.”
The melodic mom shares,
I was raised with this idea that you leave the campground better than how you found it. We were brought up to shut off the water when we were brushing our teeth, only ran the dishwasher when it was stuffed, never took 45-minute showers… my little boy is worried about flushing the toilet – we’re already starting, at 2-and-a-half. He already knows not to flush the toilet unless, you know, you have to.
Crow is also well known for her ‘Stop Global Warming Tour’ on which she toured 11 college campuses spreading the word about how to turn back the tide on the world’s climate crisis. When interviewed with regard to the tour and her green lifestyle Crow told People Magazine, “I try to wash my clothes in cold water as much as I can. I turn off lights in rooms that I’m not using. I drive a hybrid. I’m getting solar panels for my house.” Joking she added, “To save water, I’m only going to shower once a week, like I did when I was a kid – on Saturdays.”
Soleil Moon Frye launched eco children’s boutique The Little Seed in Los Angeles to make green baby and children’s products available to families who want to live a healthy lifestyle while leaving a lighter footprint on the planet. The boutique features organic clothing, sustainably designed furniture and nursery decor, non-toxic toys, teethers and feeding gear, and all natural products to inspire play and creativity.
Mom of daughters Poet, 4 1/2 and Jagger, 2, Soleil says motherhood “is the magic of life.” She also took time out recently to discuss The Little Seed with Celebrity Baby Scoop, saying,
[The Little Seed] is literally my other baby. My partner Paige and I searched the globe for non-toxic alternatives for our kids, because we didn’t know what was safe to put on our babies or what was toxic in our environment. We thought if we were feeling this way, others moms probably were too. With our products, moms don’t need to worry if baby puts it in his or her mouth. We offer so many fun things including clothing, bedding, toys, baby carriers, and more.
Thanks eco-mamas, for helping to spread the word about living the green life!
