Nicole Richie and her fiance Joel Madden threw a backyard bash this weekend to celebrate their son Sparrow‘s first birthday – he’ll officially hit the milestone on September 9.
The guest list included a few A-list friends and family, including Uncle Benji Madden and pal Ellen Pompeo and her daughter Stella Luna, who will also be turning 1 this month.
Party-goers were treated to birthday standards such as cake and balloons, but a source tells People that Nicole opted to keep things simple.
“Nicole was keeping the party simple to not overwhelm Sparrow. Everyone seemed to have a great time.”
Good for Nicole and Joel for keeping sparrow 1st birthday party simple. Not over the top like some celebrities.
