R&B singer Monica is riding the wave of her musical comeback after being out of the business for more than 4 years. The Atlanta born mother-of-2 recently performed to a sell-out audience in L.A.’s Club Nokia.
Monica, who was only 12-years-old when she recorded her first album, has resurrected her professional life but feels her main focus is parenting her two boys Rodney, 5 and Romelo, 2. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times the performer talked about her children and the challenges of taking them on tour.
They have been very patient throughout this tour, but my 5-year-old just said, ‘Mama, I love the bus, but is this almost over?’ That means it’s time for me to give them my undivided attention for a month or two. [But] I’ll go back in the studio. I want to find that balance again of catering to my relationship, my children and my family. But not disappearing in the way I have the last time.”
Monica explained how her children have contributed to her success, “I know that I have two young sons that are watching me on a daily basis,” she says. “They will have to be able to look to me and be able to feel good about the person that raised them. I think about my kids and how they’ll feel even before I record certain records.”
Monica has suffered through some difficult times, including separation from the father of her boys, but feels her situation is improving. She is dating Lakers player Shannon Brown and getting ready to film a second season of her BET reality show where viewers see her balancing a musical career and full time motherhood. The show shares it’s name with her latest release Still Standing and has become one of the most popular on the network.
The reality show star/singer talks about her latest venture,
I had a lot of things take place personally, so we prolonged taping the show so that I could really get some things in order. Now that I’m in a great place, I felt like it made sense to have the show follow me around,”
