Actress Julie Bowen dishes on her own “Modern Family” in a new interview with Parade. The funny mom makes a few interesting revelations – she’s a tomboy with anxiety issues – and gives a glimpse into her home life with her husband Scott Phillips and their boys Oliver, 3, and Gus and John, 1.
On how her hubby balances her: “The dirty secret is that I’m a very anxious person. I’m constantly looking for the hole in the doughnut. My husband, Scott, doesn’t even know the doughnut has a hole – no one told him. He’s the perfect counterbalance. He has a calming effect on me, and he’s fun.”
On being a tomboy: “People always tell me I have a lot of guy energy. I’m less comfortable in stilettos than I am in running shoes. I’m managing to keep up with my three boys pretty well, but the 3-year-old is starting to be obsessed with his man parts, and that’s a revelation.”
On one thing she won’t skip for her kids: “I’ve signed my kids up for no end of Mommy & Me classes and not shown up for a single one. But there is one thing I insist on. My sister, Annie, is an infectious-disease doctor, and she’s adamant about vaccinations. I always get a flu shot, and this year all my kids will be vaccinated. An estimated 226,000 people are hospitalized with the flu every year, and thousands die. I don’t want to have to worry. I have so much on my plate that if I can take one thing off it with just a shot, I’m down with it.”
On missing “the re-rack:” “My husband and I have this thing we call the re-rack. That’s when you get up in the morning, have breakfast, look at each other, and you’re like, ‘Let’s go back to bed,’ and then you sleep again. That is not anywhere on the menu now. There’s no re-racking.”
