Cher Had A "Really Hard Time" With Chaz's Surgery

Cher is lighting up the big screen again in the musical film Burlesque. The 64-year-old living legend opens up to Parade about having a "really hard time" when her daughter Chastity underwent gender-transition surgery to become a man named Chaz. She also talks about her 34-year-old son Elijah, whom she helped kick a heroin addiction.

When Chaz first told me about wanting a sex change, I had a really hard time with it,” Cher admits. “We talked about the transgendered thing intermittently for years. She was unhappy. Plus, she was doing drugs. [Chaz was addicted to OxyContin]. I believed that once she stopped drugs, she would have a much better life and put the transgender idea on the back burner.”

But after kicking her drug habit in 2004, Chaz became more determined than ever to make the change. “She said to me, ‘If I’m ever going to do it, I’ve got to do it now. I’m 40,’ ” Cher says. “I went, ‘If you’ve got to do it, dear, you’ve got to do it.’ ”

In May, Chaz’s gender and name were legally changed. Cher admits she was worried: “When I realized she was going to do it, it was rocky for me. I thought, What will the press do to her? What will they do to the two of us together? It’s going to be the biggest nightmare that will not stop. But the press was kinder than I thought they would be.”

Cher says she admires Chaz's courage. “It’s hard, ’cause she’s still my girl. But she has an inner strength and she’s a courageous person—she believes what she believes. She and her girlfriend came over for dinner last night. All of us were there, my boyfriend too.”

Cher also opens up about her son Elijah with second husband, rocker Gregg Allman.

“Gregory was a Southern gentleman who also happened to be a heroin addict. I kept going to rehab with him to help him try to kick drugs. It was very hard for him. Then Elijah was born, and a year later I left Gregory for good. As crazy as I was about him, I wasn’t going to let him be around my kids.”

Their son Elijah Blue, now 34, struggled with heroin dependency, but has been drug-free since an intervention organized by Cher in 2003. “Elijah’s doing really well,” she says. “He’s a good artist, a painter. He’s been asked by Louis Vuitton to design a label for them.”

Good for you Cher! I know that like you, I would've had a terrible time accepting the loose of my one and only daughter. And also like you, I would do the very best that I could to accept the changes and move forward. I've always LOVED Cher for her talent, brutal honesty, and ageless beauty!

Her 'ageless beauty' is due to extensive plastic surgery, not good genes. She looks like she's made of wax!

I think I'd have an extremely hard time if I gave birth to a baby girl and one day she decided she wanted to be a man. It takes a great amount of strength to be able to handle that news. Cause I'd much rather my child tell me they are gay then to tell me they wan to be someone else. So kudos to Cher for having that strength and unconditional love to accept her daughters wishes.

I'm glad that cher finally accepted her daughter decision. If chastity really feels she was born in the wrong body and feel she was truly a man more power to her. Also more power to his girlfriend for sticking around chaz.

Since his/her girlfriend is suppposed to be a lesbian, does chaz' new gender render her/his girlfriend heterosexual now? Or is she just up for whatever she can get with?

These celebrities need to stop raising their kids in Hollyweird.

I need to clarify 2 things for u:
1. Cher was imposter replaced many times along the way. Compare her pictures and if u have some good eyes and an open mind, u will see the difference. If not, keep believing its the same woman since the 60's (my ass!)
2. When she was 15, CHER (not the real one, coz as i said, she was replaced) left CHASTITY with a woman supposedly to look after her while she was on tour. The woman was a lesbian and she raped CHASTITY. And now CHASTITY has become CHAZ. Rings any bell? Not to say that ELIJAH accused her of being a bad mother, locking him and his sister up sometimes with no food left for them. She was awful as a "mother" and ELIJAH&CHAZ had a traumatised childhood and teenage.

But u dont have to believe me, its better the crap media feeds u. Lies and lies, deceit and deceit.

There is something seriously dysfunctional about this family. Something that Cher is perhaps unwilling to recognize. Both kids had addictions well into adulthood. Chastity's gender issues are a symptom of something else and she has replaced one drug for another being food. She has ballooned up to over 300 lbs. I don't think her issues are as easily fixed as just having her breasts removed and becoming a man. If that were the case, she would be at at decent weight. There is something else there.
