Only three days after Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted he had fathered a love child with former household staffer Mildred Patricia Baena, Maria Shriver takes comfort in having the support of her four children to help her come to grips with the shocking news.
“The kids are all banding together to support their mom right now and they’re doing their best to stay out of the spotlight,” a Schwarzenegger family source tells Us of Katherine, 21, and Christina, 19, Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13.
While the former California Governor’s wife of 25 years struggles to keep a brave face, her kids have leaned heavily on oldest sibling Katherine, who was often seen as the “second parent” to her younger sibs while Schwarzenegger was away on the campaign trail.
“Katherine is really upset about this and how her mom is right now,” the family source adds. “It’s tense because the kids need a sounding board just as much as Maria does but it’s difficult to go to their mom for questions in a time like this. Everyone feels really betrayed and embarrassed that it’s out in the open. Not for their dad’s sake but for Maria.”
In addition to emotionally supporting her sister and brothers, Katherine continues to be an inspiration to other younger kids as well. She was recently able to bring her mom some joy on Thursday in Beverly Hills, when she was honored at the GirlPower Awards luncheon for being an inspiration to young women.
Her proud mom, who had taken a week off Twitter in the wake of the family news Tweeted: “Congrats to my beautiful & brilliant daughter, @kschwarzenegger, for receiving the GirlPower Award from A Place Called Home today”.
Her other siblings seem to also be working through the very publicized family ordeal with as much strength as possible. Older brother Patrick admitted on Tuesday that he was suffering from his family drama. He Tweeted: “Some days you feel like sh–, some days you want to quit and just be normal for a bit, yet I love my family till death do us part.”
When news broke of Schwarzenegger’s fifth child – a boy who may have been born within weeks of their son Christopher, A Shriver pal said, “You have no idea how humiliating this is for her, [Maria] spent a lot of time … defending Arnold’s character…She had no idea about the child.”
Meanwhile, sources report that the devastated mom of four has hired celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasserman. Perhaps she’ll be the next one to coin the phrase, “Hasta La Vista Baby.”
