Grandfather? Really? Wow.
Those were Jim Carrey‘s words too when he found out that his daughter, Jane, was going to have a baby. But now, the Mr. Popper’s Penguins star is loving almost every minute of being a grandpa, and can’t stop gushing about his 14-month-old grandson, Jackson Riley Santana, who he says is “the coolest dude on earth, unless he gets tired and then he’s a marauding maniac.”
“What happened to me is, first of all, it was like, ‘Grandfather? Really? Wow. Let me process that one,’” Carrey tells Access Hollywood of his initial reaction to the news.
“And my publicist called immediately, ‘Are you serious!’ It was like, ‘You can’t, you can’t ever tell anyone! John Lennon was never married,’” he adds, referring to the advice the late Beatle was given when he wed his first wife, Cynthia Lennon.
“When it happened, oh my gosh, it was just like an explosion of pure bliss,” Carrey says of the day little Jackson was born.
And he’s been the boy’s number one fan since then.
“He’s so clued in and we play soccer together and he’s really coordinated, it’s amazing,” says the comedic actor. “I’m going, ‘Get him in! Get him in!’”
I’m the grandfather that wants to improve him and stuff like that. ‘Start reading to him right now! While he’s playing soccer! He must be a super being!’”
You can catch “Granddaddy Jim” — who’s also pretty cool himself — in his latest film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, when it opens in theaters June 17.
