Looking beautiful in blue on the cover of the October issue of More magazine, 43-year-old actress Naomi Watts opens up about some pretty big topics, including her hopes for her sons Sasha, 4, and Kai, 2, her late start in motherhood, and her relationship with Heath Ledger.
Like most moms, Naomi harbors some big dreams for her boys. Revealing her most important goal as a mother, she says: “I want them to feel connected to me and me to them. Always. I want them, above all, to feel sure of who they are. That they are safe in the world and confident and happy people. And of course, connected – to their parents, their friends, their family, the world and themselves. This is the most important goal/dream in my life. Everything else is gravy.”
Almost 40 when she and her partner Liev Schreiber welcomed their first child, the Aussie actress says she has no regrets about putting motherhood off for a while. In fact, she says, “I think I’m a better parent. I had a lot I wanted to do when I was younger, and perhaps I wouldn’t have been as focused; I got a lot out of the way in terms of my own dreams.”
Naomi also shares some fond memories of the time she spent with Heath Ledger, who died tragically in 2008. The pair, who met on the set of the movie Ned Kelly, dated for over a year before eventually parting ways in 2003.
“We had a beautiful relationship, only a couple of years, but he was a man who was completely full of joy, and there was a lot of laughing and affection. He was really a very special soul and made a great impact on my life. And a great actor, but I know there was so much more to come. And it’s such a tragedy for his little daughter [Matilda].”
