Celebrity chef Sandra Lee is helping families prepare for Halloween in Food Network’s upcoming special, Sandra’s Halloween Wonderland, which premieres this Sunday, October 23. The “Semi-Homemade” chef cooks up some spooky treats while dressed in elaborate Halloween costumes
Sandra-who shares her life with New York governor, Andrew Cuomo and his two daughters, opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her upcoming Halloween special where she “transform[s] into seven characters from Alice in Wonderland and beyond,” and she shares her yummy Sugar Plum Cake Pops recipe.
CBS: We are so excited to see you dressed in elaborate Halloween costumes on this year’s Sandra’s Halloween Wonderland. Can you tell us what to expect?
SL: “All the magic, marvel, and miraculousness of Halloween is captured in my Halloween Wonderland special. You’ll follow me as I enter into a dream world, and transform into seven characters from Alice in Wonderland and beyond. Watch closely as I create your favorite Halloween sweets and treats because in the blink of an eye everything can change.”
CBS: What is your favorite part of the special?
SL: “Transforming into the Mad Hatter was one of the wildest Halloween experiences. I had huge curly orange hair, a one foot tall top hat, and an outrageous outfit complete with sparkly green platform heels. To top things off, I held a fluffy black cat in my arms, and sat in a throne next to a feathery peacock!”
CBS: Have you made any plans for Halloween yet? Do you get dressed up?
SL: “Of course! I have a great passion for the holidays, and love to celebrate them. A couple of years ago, I hosted Mariah, Cara, and Michaela’s Halloween parties, and dressed as Marie Antoinette to greet their friends. This year I am going to attend Bette Midler’s Hulaween party. I am still going back and forth about who I want to be. This type of decision is never an easy one.”
CBS: Can you share a spooky treat recipe with Celebrity Baby Scoop readers?
Sugar Plum Cake Pops
Recipe courtesy Sandra Lee 2011
Yield: 12 cake pops
Cook Time: 10 minutes
2 tablespoons butter
2 ½ cups miniature marshmallows
1 teaspoon lemon zest
3 cups puffed rice cereal
½ pound white chocolate pieces
½ cup sprinkles (for decoration)
1 dozen 5” lollipop sticks
1. In a large pot over medium low heat melt butter. Add marshmallows stirring to coat with butter. Continue to stir and cook until marshmallows have completely melted. Remove from heat and stir in the lemon zest and rice cereal. Mix until cereal is completely coated.
2. Using a scant ¼ measure roll rice and marshmallow mixture into golf ball sized balls. Be sure to compress the cereal mixture tightly. Skewer lollipop stick through the center of ball. Repeat with remaining mixture.
3. Melt chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler. Dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate. Remove, and allow excess to drip spinning slightly to coat completely. Stick pop into a piece of floral or styro-foam to set up slightly before coating in sprinkles. Place back in foam and place in refrigerator to set up completely or allow several hours at room temperature.
