Angelina Jolie: The Kids Ask Us About Marriage

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are used to fielding questions from the media about whether or not they’ll one day wed – but it sounds like now they’re having to answer them at home, too!

“They have asked, yeah, because… people get married in the movies,” Angelina tells Nightline when asked if their 6 kids wonder why their parents aren’t married. “Shrek and Fiona are married, you know?”

The actress-turned-director (her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, is set to hit theaters later this month) says that she explains to the children that she and Brad don’t need to be married to be committed to one another.

“We’ve explained to them that our commitment, when we decided to start a family, was the greatest commitment you could possibly have. Once you have six children, you’re committed.”

She adds that she questions whether the kids have an alterior motive for wanting mom and dad to walk down the aisle: “I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a big cake.”

I swear I’ve heard her in past interviews that when the kids asked when they were getting married they would wed. It’s not an issue either way but I thought that was a nice sentiment.

“Once you have six children, you’re committed.” I couldn’t agree more! My partner and I have been together for nearly twelve years, have two children, and are planning one or two more – we are definitely committed! I just don’t have the bride gene… Children are a far bigger commitment than marriage anyway. It’s so easy to get a divorce, but once you have a child, you have them – and a relationship with the other parent – for life.

So true! I’ve never really understood why people kick up a fuss over unwed couples having babies. Parenthood is definitely a bigger commitment than marriage, and I don’t think that you necessarily “need” to have both. Whatever works!

If you never married yet have kids you are only together for the kids sake not because you truly love your partner. In a way that is good for being together for the childrens sake but in another way i personally would be hurt that my partner doesn’t want to stay with me for me but only because of the kids.

To ZaraB (why her boyfriend didn’t ask her to get married)- as the old saying goes – why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free.

i dont see where she said she wanted her boyfriend to ask her to marry him……where do you see that? she (and her partner) obviously dont want to get married. and as far as your saying goes, do you think every married couple waited until they were married to have sex? because that’s what that means, in case you didnt know.
try to be a little more open minded, you’ll probably make more friends that way :)

I hope they don’t marry just because their kids ask, and that they can teach them that love has absolutely no relation with marriage. Okay, to some people it may, and I respect that, but that relation doesn’t HAVE to exist!

Lau – I so agree with you. Love has no relation with marriage. It´s obvious to see that Brad and Angelina love each other very much even with no official marriage licence. They´re totally committed to one another and to their six children. Maybe they´ll get married one day but if not who cares. The Jolie-Pitt kids sure see how much their mum and dad love each other even without rings and all that. As long as Brad and Angie and their children are happy that what counts.
