Actress Mariska Hargitay may play no-nonsense detective Olivia Benson on the NBC television drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but when it comes to her three precious children, the 48-year-old mother is nothing but a big softie.
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday (April 18), Mariska opens ups about her and her husband Peter Hermann‘s emotional struggle to adopt their daughter Amaya and the surprise adoption of their third child Andrew.
“Well, with my son it was a different story,” Mariska – who is also mother to 5-year-old August – explains, making reference to how quickly the adoption of Andrew really was. “It was very different with my son it all happened very quickly and that’s not usually how it happens. I would say usually, [adopting a child] takes the same about of time it takes for a baby to grow in your belly. ”
“We got a call out of nowhere from our lawyer who said, ‘We have this amazing little boy and this amazing opportunity.’” she adds, referencing that they adopted Andrew a mere 6 months after welcoming Amaya into their home. “With [Amaya] it took months and months and with [Andrew] it was — truth be told, it was two days.”
Mariska continues to reveal that her children have been “nothing shy of a miracle.”
“This year has been a year of true blessings,” she says, welling up with tears. “Way to make me cry Ellen!”
