Mariska Hargitay Tears Up Talking About Her Babies

With their family-of-three growing to five, it's been an unforgettable year for Mariska Hargitay and her husband Peter Hermann. Though the long road to their bigger brood has included some heartache, the Law & Order actress teared up this week when she told Ellen DeGeneres, "This has been a year of blessings."

Just 6 months after the couple brought home their baby girl Amaya Josephine, they surprised many when they announced that they'd adopted again, this time a boy named Andrew. Though she says they'd hoped to add to their family, they didn't expect it to happen quite so soon!

With their family-of-three growing to five, it’s been an unforgettable year for Mariska Hargitay and her husband Peter Hermann. Though the long road to their bigger brood has included some heartache, the Law & Order actress teared up this week when she told Ellen DeGeneres, “This has been a year of blessings.”

Just 6 months after the couple brought home their baby girl Amaya Josephine, they surprised many when they announced that they’d adopted again, this time a boy named Andrew. Though she says they’d hoped to add to their family, they didn’t expect it to happen quite so soon!

“We got a call out of nowhere from our lawyer who said, ‘We have this amazing little boy and this amazing opportunity.’ It was just one of those things that we were not expecting at all and my husband and I looked at each other and have never been more sure about anything, and knew it was just right,” says Mariska, who is also mom to 5-year-old son August. “It all happened very quickly and that’s not usually how it happens. I would say usually it takes the same amount of time it takes for a baby to grow in your belly. With my daughter, it took months and months and with my son it was … truth be told, it was two days.”

Earlier this month Mariska revealed that their first adoption attempt fell through when the birth mother changed her mind at the very last minute.

“It was nothing short of devastating,” Mariska told Good Housekeeping magazine. “But… this is what I’ve come to understand about life: It was probably the greatest, happiest ending. I mean, it was so painful for us, but it was deeply joyful and deeply right for her.”
