Dark Shadows star Johnny Depp is undeniabley one of the world’s biggest film stars but in a recent interview with The Sun, the 48-year-old actor opened up about his troubled and unhappy youth and claims his life vastly improved only once he had his children Lily-Rose, 12, and 10-year-old Jack with longtime love Vanessa Paradis, 39.
“There is nothing on earth that could ever make me want to relive certain years of my life when I was young,” Johnny reveals, making reference to his parents’ divorce when he was 15 and his use of self-harm as a coping mechanism. “You grow up a bit damaged or broken then you have some success but you don’t know how to feel good about the work you’re doing or the life you’re leading.”
Although it comes as little surprise that the Golden Globe-winning star may not enjoy taking the childhood walk down memory lane, he admits the “emptiness” he felt growing up and much into his successful adult years remained until he had children.
“You feel empty,” he says. “I was angry and frustrated until I started my own family and my first child was born. Until then I didn’t really appreciate life the way I should have, but fortunately I woke up.”
Johnny is currently starring in Dark Shadows, his eight collaborative effort with acclaimed director Tim Burton. Johnny portrays a vampire who comes round after being buried alive for two centuries.
