Grown-Up Getaway To Palm Springs: The Del Marcos Hotel

Grown-Up Getaway To Palm Springs: The Del Marcos Hotel

A few weeks ago my husband and I left the kids at home and took off for a little adult getaway. We were excited for a couple of days to ourselves to relax, reconnect and be in a room that wasn’t littered with sneakers and nail polish. (Before you call child services on us, you should know that our kids are teenagers, and perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. Besides, all we had to do was refer to our trip as a ‘romantic weekend’ for them to decide they wanted no part of it.)

Retro Feel, New Digs
We headed to the newly remodeled Del Marcos Hotel in downtown Palm Springs – a beautiful gem built in 1947 by the famed architect William F. Cody. With its mid-century modern architecture and vintage furniture, you fully expect Dean Martin and the rest of the Rat Pack to emerge from one of the rooms and sit by the (saltwater) pool with a cocktail. And they would feel right at home – the music throughout the hotel is retro, too – no blasting boomboxes allowed. Call us old fogeys, but we found the music to be one of our favorite things about the hotel – although maybe the neighbors could have done without my rendition of ‘Luck Be A Lady.’

Up Close And Personal
At the risk of sounding too gushy, we loved everything about this place. Its small size (only 17 rooms), the attention to detail (we had what looked like and authentic hanging mosaic from the ‘50s in our room), its location nestled against the San Jacinto Mountains, and the fact that the ‘front desk’ consists of one person sitting behind a (very nicely designed) table. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and it felt like a truly personal experience. After staying at the Del Marcos I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to set foot again in a 600-room mega chain hotel, where you have to walk what feels like an entire city block just to get to the concierge.

Just The Two Of Us
The hotel is adults only, so if you think you’re going to miss the sounds of wailing babies at night or teenagers yelling “cannonball!” every three seconds while you’re trying to relax poolside, this might not be the place for you. This was the first adults-only hotel we’ve stayed at and I have to say it was refreshing and extremely relaxing – because of its intimate setting it makes sense to encourage a kid-free experience. We’ve loved taking our two daughters on vacation with us over the years, but I could get used to the idea of staying at adults-only locales in the future. (Speaking of the kids, after hearing the ‘adults only’ moniker we had to explain to them that it wasn’t that kind of hotel.)

The Del Marcos Knows Details
Each room has the name of a different person from the era, and ours was the “Johnny Costa” named for Frank Sinatra’s private chef. Inside, the space is a gorgeous. My husband and I both have art backgrounds and are suckers for a nicely designed room, so while you might find a more luxuriously appointed room at a ‘big box’ hotel, we’ll take clean lines and an authentically and tastefully designed environment any day. We loved the vintage fabrics, the hip furniture and even the retro tile in the shower. And I instantly fell in love with the clock – I’d already picked out a place for it above our fireplace before my husband reminded me that it was bolted firmly to the wall.

Walk This Way
The Del Marcos is walking distance from Palm Canyon Road in the historic Palm Springs hotel and shopping district where you’ll find lots of great restaurants and boutiques. On the recommendation of friends we decided on The Falls, a steak a seafood restaurant famous for the ‘smoking martinis.’ (We thought they were smoking, as in ‘awesome’ until they arrived at our table and they were literally smoking – through some combination of science and magic wisps of white vapors were emanating from the top of my Lemon Drop. I usually only see that after I’ve had the martini.) We had a fantastic steak dinner there and highly recommend it, but there are lots of other restaurants to choose from in the area – and as I mentioned they are all a short walk from the hotel.

If you’re planning a romantic getaway, a girls weekend or even a gathering of people you don’t like (hey, it happens), I guarantee you’ll love the Del Marcos. We’ll definitely be going back – this time with friends – and we plan on staying longer and taking advantage of the DIY barbecue, poolside bar and free beach cruiser loaners. Maybe you’ll see us there – we’re the ones who know all the words to ‘Luck Be A Lady’.
