Swimming champion Brendan Hansen has a lot to smile about. He’s competing in the London 2012 Summer Olympics and expecting his first child with his wife Martha.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist Tweeted: “Well the news is out! My wife Martha Hansen and I are expecting! Hope the worlds ready for a lil Hansen runnin around!”
He explained to US Weekly how his wife told him the news.
He shared, “She ran down the stairs in the morning before I left for workout with a pregnancy test in her hands. To this day it is still the fastest I’ve seen her move that early in the morning!”
Martha, 30, is a sixth grade math teacher. It was her who encouraged him to compete in the London Olympics.
“She said, ‘Look, are you going to regret not trying again, once we’re 40 and have kids?’ I said yes,” Brendan says.
“I think knowing I am going to be a dad soon just puts everything in perspective. Past Olympics, as I prepared, I thought the world revolved around the Games. Now I see a much larger picture. I’ll be nervous for both but I wouldn’t have it any other way. If I can be half the dad my dad was for me than I will be doing just fine!”
The couple plan to find out the baby’s sex after his last swim at the games.
He told the New York Times, “We’re going to wait until after I’m done. That’s the plan, anyway. In the two years we’ve been married we’ve opened our Christmas presents on the 16th of December.”
