Aja Volkman is the frontwoman for the independent band, Nico Vega, who recently opened for Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. The rising rockstar became a mommy in August to daughter Arrow Eve.

CBS: Tell us about your new video for We Are The Art. Tell us about the positive messages of womanhood in the video wherein you bare your baby bump.
AV: “For the past few years, I felt like I was missing out on a major part of life that I wanted to experience. I was traveling around living a very adventurous, yet taxing lifestyle. It’s hard to feel grounded when you are touring. Having a baby is the most grounding and empowering thing I have ever done. I wanted to show a very human side of myself.
I believe that women should be able to do it all if they choose to. Just because motherhood and rock n’roll don’t seem like they would mix well, it doesn’t have to be true [laughs]. Everyone has challenges. Mine are just unique to my life choices. Creating a baby is the ultimate art. I thought it fit perfectly with the song.”
CBS: Tell us about the album, also called We Are The Art. What are the influences on the album?
AV: “The whole record is about the journey the band has been through the last few years. It’s everything from heartache, to falling in love, to self empowerment, to vulnerable memories. And it wouldn’t be a Nico Vega record without mentioning America, so there is that too. It will be available in spring of 2013.”
CBS: Tell us about being the frontwoman for your band, Nico Vega. What’s it like being a rockstar?
AV: “Ha. Its great! I have no complaints. I love to perform and I love to write music. I do have a love/hate relationship with it at times, but that’s because I am a lazy perfectionist who is extremely obsessive and driven. All contradictions. I get to the point where I can only listen to classical music and birds chirping.”
CBS: We hear you just had a baby girl. Congratulations! Please share her name and birthdate. How are you adjusting to motherhood?
AV: “Her name is Arrow Eve Reynolds born on August 18th 2012. She is amazing. My husband has been on tour for nearly 3 months, so it’s just been the two of us. I have never been so happy. I do miss him a lot, but getting to know her has been amazing.”
CBS: In terms of taking your baby on the road, have you received any good advice from fellow rockstar moms on how to juggle it all?
AV: “I haven’t really known a lot of rockstar moms. Arrow will go on the road with me. I’m excited. Its going to be great!”
CBS: How do you keep the romance alive amidst diapers and busy schedules?
AV: “My husband Dan is the man of my dreams so it’s easy to keep it alive. No doubt it’s different after having a baby, but just another beautiful layer. We will have more time together starting 1 week from now.”
CBS: What have been your greatest joys of motherhood? Biggest challenges?
AV: “Greatest joys… for sure feeling the strength of doing it by myself the first few months. I didn’t read about motherhood that much, I just used my intuition for the most part. I would recommend it. Women are gifted the ability to understand the needs of their baby. Its like a dance. and practice makes you better. It was really scary at first, but it builds tremendous amounts of confidence. The biggest challenge has been having Dan gone as well. Everything takes a lot of planning.”
CBS: What’s up next for you?
AV: “Music, travel, love, and family.
I feel really blessed. I have everything that I have ever wanted. It wasn’t always that way, there was a lot of struggle to get here. As my drummer Dan Epand always puts it, ‘The pleasure is worth the pain.'”View Slideshow »»
