Meet Olive Kopelman.
Barrymore, 37, gave birth to Olive, her first child with art consultant husband Will Kopelman, on September 26.
“I can’t wait to pick her up from school, just being in the line of cars when she gets out,” the actress said of her dreams of motherhood. “I want her to live a life where she knows we will be there. That is everything to me. That is what I wanted most when I was a kid, and it’s what my kid will have.”
Barrymore’s tumultuous childhood has been well documented. She was born into a legendary Hollywood family, and had her breakout role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at the age of 7. She went on to write her autobiography when she was 14, after two stints in rehab to battle drug and alcohol addiction.
“I really wanted a wonderful traditional home for my kid. Will comes from a good family, he provides a strong family, it’s amazing,” she said. “For people who didn’t have the strongest families, or traditional families, if you can create that, you have a second chance. It just makes me so emotional because it’s like a miracle.”
The first-time mom says no one prepared her for the responsibility she’d feel after her daughter was born.
“You have the highest highs and yet you’re facing the biggest fear of, ‘How do I keep someone alive?,'” she admits.
One of newest family traditions? Singing Good Morning from Singin’ in the Rain to get little Olive to smile. Gushes the new mom: “It’s like the biggest crush I’ve ever had in my life!”
