Will Smith: Willow Pulled Out Of ‘Annie’ To Enjoy Childhood

'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' Premiere

Mega movie star Will Smith says his 12-year-old daughter Willow has decided to take a break from the family career.

While attending “Real Talk with Sister Souljah and Will Smith” at Philadelphia’s Temple University last weekend, the actor, 44, revealed why his daughter pulled out of the upcoming musical film Annie.

“Willow was supposed to be doing Annie,” Will said. “We got Jay-Z to do the movie [and] got the studio to come in. [But] Willow had such a difficult time on tour with ‘Whip my Hair’ and she said, ‘You know Daddy, I don’t think so,’” the entertainer recalled. “I said, ‘Baby, hold up! I said no, no, no. Listen, you’ll be in New York with all of your friends and Beyonce will be there. You will be singing and dancing.’ And she looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, I have a better idea, how about I just be 12.’”

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum then realized that his little girl with wife Jada Pinkett Smith had a good point.

“I’m really learning through Willow the necessity that we have to snap ourselves back and refocus on the emotional needs of the people that we love,” the father to Willow and sons Jaden, 14, and Trey, 20, added. “Someone’s emotional needs can be very very different from your dreams and what you think they should be doing and where they are supposed to be.”

“The thing that had become very clear to me is the danger of a material world and focusing so hard on coming up with money or a house or a job,” he added. “You focus so hard on those things, and sometimes you can lose focus on why you are doing it in the first place. The only reason to do any of that is to have love.

But Will’s youngest son certainly hasn’t abandoned showbiz. Will and Jaden are co-starring in the upcoming action-adventure sci-fi film, After Earth, set to hit theaters this June.

Will is one sick puppy. I mean, come on: One focuses “so hard on coming up with money or a house or a job” is so you can have love????? Really Will?

Has he ever heard of nurturing your child at a fundamental level (education, cultural exposure, emotional & physical strength, spirituality) so that they can forge ahead in the world and do their own thing. Find the gifts that GOD gave to them. Not to exploit the gifts that their DNA gave to them.

He lives in a bubble. Not in the real world. I hope he’s always around to take care of these kids that he raised in a bubble. God help them if they are ever on their own.

Aren’t all parents guilty of doing this at times? Don’t all parents sometimes get wrapped up in providing for their children that they sometimes miss those opportunities to lie on the floor and color with their kids? Aren’t we all constantly reevaluating our priorities when it comes to our families?

I think he sounded honest and he seems to understand that providing for your family can be complicated. I don’t think he sounded like a sick puppy… Just a dad who saw an amazing opportunity for his child, but listened to her needs over his own desires.

And regarding your statement about talents from DNA vs God… I really don’t see the difference. God made your DNA the same way he made you.

They fancy themselves so intellectually philosophical when in fact they are uneducated trendies who follow any off the wall ideologies that are presented to them. Will and Jada fail to understand that they are the parents and not the best friends. Those kids run the show and as a result, no one in that family lives in the real world. As for this particular child’s fashion ideas, I think we can all agree that she tries way, way too hard to be different and to impress. I like people who aren’t afraid to push the envelope a little bit as long as it makes fashion sense but the things she wears always look as though they came out of an H.R. Pufnstuf costume closet. This family needs to get a grip.

You like people who aren’t afraid to push the envelope a little bit…. but if they push it too far, you’ll mock them relentlessly.. is that it?

      Idiot.

Willow always looks cute the way she is dressed. I don’t think the parents are pushing her at all. In fact, just the opposite. There’s no harm done here. Willow explained herself and she will now be “12″, so chill out.
