During a Tuesday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet opened up about her three kids – Mia, 13, Joe, 10, and Bear Blaze, 3 months – and surviving her first California earthquake.
“When I was pregnant with Mia and when I was pregnant with Joe, I didn’t name them before they came out because I always felt like I just have to see them and see who they’re going to be,” the Labor Day actress, 38, shared. “But of course, this time around there’s Mia and Joe and the whole pregnancy is about, ‘What are we gonna call the baby?’ So it was really lovely, actually. They were very much included and we settled on Bear quite early on.”
She went on to describe how she came up with her tot’s first name.
“A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear and I just had always really loved it,” she said. “And he was very much a bear. He was everyone’s shoulder to cry on, he was a big bear hug, he was a great figure in my life.”
Her son’s unique middle moniker pays reference to the house fire Winslet escaped in August 2011 while on vacation in the Caribbean. That was the weekend she met her husband, Ned Rocknroll (born to the name Abel Smith).
“Bear’s second name is Blaze, because my husband and I met in a house fire basically,” she said. “Well, we did. The house burned down and we survived. But we wanted something of the fire, and so Blaze was the name that we came up with.”
While her husband’s surname is amusing, their son will go by mom’s last name.
“People who know Ned they know he’s very much about irony and living life and having fun so he changed it to Rocknroll,” she shared.
The Titanic actress went on to talk about experiencing her first-ever earthquake in L.A. early Monday morning — while pumping breast milk!
“It’s 6:20 something or other and I’m sitting in the hotel here in LA and I’m pumping because I have a 14 week old baby,” Winslet said. “I’m here for 48 hours I couldn’t bring him. It’s too far. It’s a 12-hour plane ride. And so I’m pumping, starting at my beautiful picture of my beautiful baby boy and my husband’s on the other line and the room starts to shake,” she said of the 4.4-scale quake. “I hung up, ran into the doorframe with my friend who was with me and she’s like it’s an earthquake.. .I just carried on pumping through the whole entire thing.”
The Oscar winner was photographed receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just hours after that earth-shaking experience.
