Kate Hudson covers the May issue of Self magazine. The mom to Ryder, 10, and Bing, 2,  talks about relationships and staying fit.

She says on romance, “Relationships are the most challenging things. It’s where you do the most work in your life. You come face-to-face with yourself, and if you can deal with realizing we’re all flawed, accept it and work with it, you might have a really amazing, lasting relationship.”

Reflecting on happiness she shares,  “I think happiness is a practice. But not the sort you find in self-help books, where you smile and have a vision board. You’re fooling yourself to think that’s how you’re going to find it. I love the idea of a gratitude journal, but there are times when mine turns into a venting journal. Not so grateful, just a big ol’ vent!”

For advice Kate listens to her mom Goldie Hawn.

“My mom once said something so poignant to me: ‘Honor your female friendships, because men can come and go, but when we nurture our relationships with women, they can be forever.’ I really believe that. My girlfriends are so important to me. They’ve been my rock-solid foundation.”

On staying healthy she says, “My workout mantra is ‘break a sweat every day, even if it’s just for 20 minutes.”

She adds, “I want to be around for a while for my kids” – including that she doesn’t like to deprive herself. “(My favorite dishes include) cheeseburger and fries, creamy white-truffle pasta, bowls of ice cream. Everything in moderation, but I indulge at least three times a week.”

In recent news things look rosy for Kate and Matthew. The couple celebrated her 35th birthday and anniversary on April 19.

Us Weekly reports the Muse rocker organized the bash himself at her family’s house in Palm Springs during the second weekend of Coachella, where he and his band performed two sets.

A source revealed,  “The party went until almost 5 a.m. People did not want to leave.”

Another source said, “They really want to stay together. All signs of trouble are gone. She was supporting him at Coachella and watching him intensely…She was very proud of his performance.”
