Clay Aiken: Singing In Front Of Son Makes Him "Nervous"

Singer Clay Aiken gave Popeater an intimate look into the day in his life, following him while he goes from appearance to appearance promoting his new album, Tried And True. In the piece, we learn that Clay loves his iPad, grilled cheese sandwiches, and calls himself a "hermit."

Clay talks about his son, two-year-old Parker. Surprisingly, he says he doesn't play too much music around the house. "For some reason, I'm nervous to sing for him," he says, "My son doesn't like to listen to me sing, but he enjoys listening to other people sing. Maybe kids just don't like to hear their parents, ever."

Parker doesn't seem to be musical just yet, and that's just fine with Clay, who says he doesn't plan on having Parker join him in the music industry, but "will encourage him in whatever he wants to, whatever he's passionate about, but I'm just gonna hope it's not this."

Parker Aiken Needed Surgery At 1-Month Old

For most parents, the fact that the little baby they brought home is their child doesn't truly hit home right away - and for Clay Aiken, his moment of realization came amidst a frightening health scare with son Parker.

"He had been gassy for weeks and then he started throwing up," Aiken, 29, tells PEOPLE in its latest issue. "Jaymes [Foster, the baby's mother] and I were trying to be calm, rational parents, so we didn't call the doctors too much, but it just got to a point where he was vomiting everything. He was starting to get dehydrated."

Parker was admitted to the hospital, and diagnosed with pyloric stenosis, a intestinal condition that complicates baby's digestion, and scheduled for surgery to correct the problem.

"Parker had been in one day already when I got really panicky," Clay recalls. He woke up at 2 a.m. and headed to the hospital. "I was a little worried, like 'I don't think they're going to let me in the hospital at 2 or3 in the morning.' Then I thought, 'Wait a second, I'm the father! Of course they'll let me in," Aiken says. "It was the first moment when I thought, 'I'm actually this child's father!' "

Clay Aiken's best friend, 50-year-old music producer Jaymes Foster, is the mother of their 7-week-old son Parker. Jaymes chatted with People during the magazine's photo shoot at Aiken's home in North Carolina, where she is currently staying. Jaymes opened up about her pregnancy, being an older mom, and who's better at changing diapers. On what makes Clay a great dad: "He's an incredible caregiver. As far as changing the diapers and seeing what's wrong with [Parker] and getting him to go sleep, Clay's a natural and he's really, really good with that. On a larger scale, he's the perfect person. He's been a school teacher, we have the same morals, family is very important to him and Parker means everything to us." On how she feels about having a baby at 50: "I really think I was not ready to have children – well, I know I was not ready to have children, be a mother – in my 20s or 30s. I had the freedom then to travel the world and have a wonderful career. I believe at this point in my life it's the right time, and I think because it's the right time, I'll hopefully do a good job. If I don't, Clay will be all over me!" On her pregnancy: "I thought I'd be one of the lucky ones that didn't get the nausea, that I'd sail right through the pregnancy. But unfortunately I had it the whole time! I dealt with it on my own until I found out that there is a great new medication that helps eliminate the nausea, which I took the entire pregnancy. But other than that, it was really a breeze."

Clay Aiken Talks to People About Being A Dad

This week's cover of People magazine, features Clay Aiken and his new son, Parker Foster Aiken, born August 8. The cover also touts the headline, "Yes, I'm gay." Clay spoke with the magazine about what finally made him come out to the public - a promise he'd made to himself before his child was born.

"It was the first decision I made as a father," Aiken, 29, tells the upcoming issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday. "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

Clay, a born-again Christian singer, says that he wants his son to be raised in an environment that is "accepting and allowing him to be happy," and that's very important to him.

Says Aiken: "I have no idea if he'll be gay or straight. It's not something I'll have anything to do with, or that he'll have anything to do with. It's already probably up inside the code there ... No matter what the situation you're in, if you're raised in a loving environment, that's the most important thing."

Parker was born by artificial insemination to Jaymes Foster, and he weighed 6 lbs, 2 oz. People hits newsstands everywhere on Friday.
