Jada Pinkett Smith On Her "Excruciating" Choices

Mom-of-two Jada Pinkett Smith graces REDBOOK's August cover and gets honest and emotional about motherhood, her "excruciating" career choices, and raising her superstar kids Jaden, 12, and Willow, 10, with movie star hubby Will Smith.

On raising her kids in Hollywood: "Let me tell you what I fear most: Them growing up like I did, in a house with drugs in a war zone, where if I walked out my door I could be shot. Hollywood ain't nothing compared to that! Growing up in the streets of Baltimore, or the streets of Philly where Will grew up — I'd rather have my kids here. It still makes me nervous that they're part of something that isn't totally real, but it's up to Will and me to teach them what's real and what's not."

Jada Pinkett Smith is one proud mom. And she has good reason to be - her kids with husband Will Smith, 10-year-old Willow and 12-year-old Jaden, already have flourishing Hollywood careers. And Jada says that being there and helping them along with their success is a proud achievement for her as well.

“I think the most fulfilling thing is allowing them to fulfill their dreams and seeing them fly," she told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show. "This is probably the most gratifying experience that I could have. Giving them the opportunities that they’ve had and being by their sides will be the most gratifying thing that I will probably ever do in my life.”

Jada Pinkett Smith wants the world to know that her kids are doing just fine, thanks. The movie star mom and her husband Will Smith have faced some criticism for helping their kids Jaden, 12, and Willow, 10, launch their own Hollywood careers, but in a new interview with Uptown magazine she insists that there’s no need to worry about the star-powered siblings.

"There are so many other kids you can worry about. My kids? They're going to be alright,” Jada says. “I get why people would criticise. But people need to know that Will and I would never put our children in a situation that would bring them any detriment."

Jada Pinkett Smith has a relaxed attitude when it comes to parenting. The 39-year-old actress – who has two children with hubby Will Smith – believes that giving her kids the freedom to express themselves creatively and to make their own decisions will be beneficial as they grow up.

“I see my children as little people, not necessarily people to control,” she explains. “You’ve got to help them develop and become individuals. You have to find out who they are but enforce boundaries to keep them safe.”
