Maggie Gyllenhaal: Ramona Gets Homesick

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Ramona Gets Homesick

Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard were in New York last night for the premiere of his new movie, An Education.

The couple and their 3-year-old daughter Ramona recently returned home from London, where Maggie was busy filming the kid-friendly flick Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. The family-of-three has been spending a lot of time overseas these days: Along with Nanny McPhee, An Education was filmed in England, as was Maggie's blockbuster The Dark Knight.

“Peter and I were saying that we are going home and we are going to say little English things and our friends are going to think we are super pretentious!” she jokes.

However, the busy mom admits that it's not always easy to just pick up and go now that she has a child to consider.

“When you’re pregnant, people love giving advice,” the 31-year-old actress recently told UK newspaper The Telegraph. “And the advice that I have the most disdain for is, 'Oh, kids are so adaptable. Just throw them on your back and take them wherever you want. They will manage.’ I brought my daughter to London for four months and she is happy here, we have had a great time here, but she wakes up in the morning and says, 'Momma, I miss Brooklyn.’ I think, yes, it is hard to be two and all of a sudden be in a totally new place. It’s very different to being 31 and doing that. The thing is, children are adaptable. They will manage, I believe, but always at a cost.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal & Ramona Go Hand In Hand

She's such a big girl now! Maggie Gyllenhaal was spotted strolling hand in hand with her daughter Ramona Sarsgaard, who turns 3 next month, in Brooklyn on Friday (Sept. 18).

The 31-year-old Dark Knight star recently shared her struggles with working outside of the home:

Now that I have my own daughter, there are definitely times I think, Why do I have a job? Sometimes I fantasize about staying home with Ramona all day, so that I don’t miss a thing in this amazing 2-year-old’s life."

Maggie Gyllenhaal: "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"

Maggie Gyllenhaal stepped out from brother Jake’s shadow when she starred in the 2002 sadomasochistic comedy Secretary. The 31-year-old mom-of-one went on to become a Hollywood star in such films as Sherrybaby, Trust the Man and The Dark Knight. Maggie wrote a thoughtful article for Working Mother, focusing on how she juggles her love for working with her love for her 2 1/2-year-old daughter Ramona.

"Growing up in Los Angeles, I was surrounded by plenty of working moms, including my grandmother, a pediatrician, and my mother, a writer and producer. This seemed very natural to me. I just thought, Well, that’s what moms do. They work and raise their kids. I was brought up to believe I could do anything I wanted professionally and, of course, be a mother at the same time—but I’m finding that it’s complicated. It requires a lot of thought and planning, and I haven’t figured it out yet.

Now that I have my own daughter, there are definitely times I think, Why do I have a job? Sometimes I fantasize about staying home with Ramona all day, so that I don’t miss a thing in this amazing 2-year-old’s life. But I’m an artist; I love my job. And I work on projects that inspire me. I feel very, very lucky to be in the position where going to work means I’m feeding myself. As a mother, you have to make sure you do that, because that will nourish your child, too.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Mothers Are "Just Doing The Best They Can"

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Mothers Are "Just Doing The Best They Can"

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who co-starred in the immensely successful The Dark Knight last year, is now taking a step in the opposite direction with indie film Away We Go, directed by Sam Mendes.

In the film, Maggie plays a hippie mother obsessed with back to the basics parenting. The 31–year-old actress, who is raising a 3-year old daughter Ramona with Peter Saarsgard, recently spoke with Parade.com about how she was glad she was a mom herself before taking the part.

On becoming an earth mother: "Shortly before my daughter was born, I had a fantasy that everything was going to be organic and cloth diapers. I think a lot of people are that way. And then, of course, you actually have a child you have to manage in the real world with all the complications that brings. But the woman I play is really far out when it comes to her ideas of parenting. She's still nursing her 4-year-old and the whole family sleeps in bed together. I've never gone that far."

Maggie & Ramona Are Giggling Girls

Maggie Gyllenhaal and her 2-year-old daughter Ramona were seen arriving at Maggie's off Broadway play Uncle Vanya in NYC on Saturday. Maggie was talking and giggling with Ramona while crossing the street and attempting to shield her from the paparazzi. Dad is fellow actor Peter Sarsgaard.

Maggie recently commented on the challenges of raising a newborn: "I’m not a leave-them-in-their-crib-to-cry kind of girl. Fundamentally, I didn’t find that worked. Everyone’s got their own thing, you know? You can’t tell another person when it’s right to stop breastfeeding, or how to put your kid to sleep. Every child is different.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal was on hand while Fisher Price unveiled their new "Precious Planet" line. The 31-year-old actress presented a check from Fisher Price to the Wildlife Conservation Society — a cause she feels strongly about supporting. Babble recently spoke to the Batman: The Dark Knight star about navigating subways with her 2-year-old daughter Ramona, sleep training, and her valiant effort to split parenting duties equally with her fiance, actor Peter Sarsgaard. On the challenges of trying to split parenting equally with Peter: "Yes. Yeah. I don't think it's possible. In our case, maybe it's because I have a daughter, the mom is the mom. There is something about that. But we try. I think we both just fundamentally, from the moment I was pregnant, from the moment she was born, believed that we needed to share. I'm not a leave-them-in-their-crib-to-cry kind of girl. And we do. But, it's still always — I mean, Peter took her out to this little class she takes in the morning, and he said, "No, you don't come — this is when I'll relieve you." Because when we're together — if we've been away from her a lot — she just wants to be with me. That's kinda how she is at the moment. But I was raised that way too, where my parents were trying to split things equally. It's a good effort to make. But it's hard." Click below to continue reading the interview with Maggie...

Maggie Gyllenhaal: "Being A Mum Won't Change My Film Choices"

Maggie Gyllenhaal: "Being A Mum Won't Change My Film Choices"

"I've been lucky enough so far only to have to work on things that have interested me," she says. "If Ramona sees them at some point, even if I have my clothes off, or if I'm playing a drug addict, as long as they're about something and they're worth making and they're asking people who see the movie to think in a different way or open their minds or their hearts, then I'll be proud for her to see it. I think it's only if I start making choices based on things that I don't think are honourable, then I'll be ashamed for her to see the movie, but I don't think the subject matter will have to change."
