M.I.A. & Her Big Apple Buddies

M.I.A. was spotted arriving with her 17-month-old son Ikhyd and fiancé Benjamin Brewer at New York's Ed Sullivan Theater on Tuesday (July 13) for her appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

The 34-year-old mother of one recently talked about their move to Brentwood. "I wanted an environment where I could have a lot of friends and family come and stay. That was the important part for me. And in New York I wouldn't have been able to afford someplace where I could have, like, all my friends come and crash out and where I could still have a baby."

M.I.A. On Her Childhood, Move To Brentwood

M.I.A., born to the name Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, opens up to GQ about her extraordinary life. "I think this is the happiest I've been for a long time," says the 34-year-old mother of one. The Grammy and Academy Award-nominated artist opens up about her troubled childhood in Sri Lanka, her move to California, and her 1-year-old son Ikhyd.

On 1-year-old son Ikhyd: "Today he climbed out of the pen, had to take the door kind of off the hinges and move it aside to get around. And that's amazing, that he's figured it out already—and that he's strong enough to do that."

On moving to Brentwood, not New York City: "I wanted an environment where I could have a lot of friends and family come and stay. That was the important part for me. And in New York I wouldn't have been able to afford someplace where I could have, like, all my friends come and crash out and where I could still have a baby."

On the war-torn Sri Lankan ghetto of her childhood: "I lived on a street, a dead-end street. There were like seven or eight houses, and then you turn the corner and there was another seven, eight houses. But my whole family lived on the street. So it was amazing. I grew up with about a hundred of my cousins, playing hide-and-seek all over the village and the temples."

M.I.A.'s third album, /\/\ /\ Y /\, will be released July 13.

M.I.A.: New Album Influenced By Son & Politics

M.I.A. covers the July issue of British magazine Dazed and Confused. The 34-year-old new mom to 16-month-old son Ikhyd talks about her political agitation and the inspiration behind her third album /\/\Y/\ - a title unrecognizable to Google.

On how her baby influenced her new album: "In the last months of pregnancy I watched so much destruction that was happening in Sri Lanka, and saw hundreds of babies being blown up. It was disgusting and it was horrible to watch and I felt so guilty inflicting that on my unborn baby. But at the same time it was a reality. I couldn't really ignore it, I got extra protective. People were sending me death threats and telling me bad sh*t about my kid... People would write on Twitter and YouTube, 'Your baby is going to die,' because I was talking about the Sri Lankan government and the issues that were going on there. Even though I had all this amazing success, at the same time I was watching this crazy destruction going on over there. No one really wanted to talk about it and then all these people were reaching out to me to talk about it because I am the only one that can represent them. At the same time I was pregnant and I didn't want to have to deal with that sh*t but I had no choice. It was the month they decided to end a 30 year long civil war so it wasn't like I could go, 'Ooo, sorry I just can't deal with this right now, I've got a baby on the way!' Maybe I should have done that. I think the album is a mixture of all those things - babies, death, destruction, and powerlessness."

M.I.A. Covers Complex Magazine

Her son Ikhyd is just 15 months old, but M.I.A. admits she already worries about the struggles he'll face in his life. The Paper Planes singer, who is engaged to Ben Brewer (son of billionaire Edgar Bronfman Jr), talks motherhood and music in the latest issue of Complex magazine.

On her son's future struggles: "I don't hope for them, but he's probably going to have them. I think their generation is probably going to have the craziest, you know?... Any kid being born in these times is gonna have to be resilient to a million and one things. We thought we'd seen it all, and our parents thought that they'd seen it, but every generation it gets more and more intense."

M.I.A's Son's Name - Ikhyd Not Ickitt

Although it was previously announced to be Ickitt, M.I.A's newborn son's name has now been revealed as Ikhyd.

According to the baby's birth certificate, Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam officially named her son Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman.

The official certificate also revealed another interesting fact. M.I.A's birth date is listed as July 18, 1975 which makes her real age 33 (not 31 as previously believed).

It has just been announced that Ikhyd's mom, in her first major appearance following her performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards (pictured above on her due date), has been booked for the second night of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival on April 18.

So what do you think? Is Ikhyd better than Ickitt?
