Mira Sorvino: There's No Such Thing As Supermom

Actress Mira Sorvino makes it all look so easy – raising her kids, managing a successful career and maintaining a solid marriage – but as she tells Mom, even she realizes that the idea of 'having it all' may be somewhat of a myth.

"There’s kind of an image of “Yay—the happy working mom!” and everything works out so well, but it’s really difficult to juggle," Mira points out. "There’s no such thing as the supermom who does it all and it’s all perfect. You only have 100% to give, and you can’t give 100% to both your work and your children. So you have to make choices that feel right for you and your family, and no one can tell you that but yourself."

Mira has three children – daughter Mattea, 5½, and sons Johnny, 4, and Holden, 15 months – with husband Chris Backus and she gives him props for being an involved dad. "My husband and I have had three kids and we’ve been married for six years now, so a lot of it has been spent being pregnant or raising small children," she says. "Chris is amazing because he really jumped in with both feet and didn’t shy away from being an active parent in a way that I’ve found kind of extraordinary."

For Mira, one thing is certain: for all its ups and downs, parenthood is exhilarating.

I’ve experienced moments of joy with my kids I didn’t know were possible before. Sometimes when we’re hugging and laughing together, I think to myself, This is truly heaven!

Mira Sorvino Balances The Mother-Load

Mira Sorvino Balances The Mother-Load

Mira Sorvino is one of the many actresses as-of-late that are choosing to give their acting careers the back seat to motherhood. The 42-year-old Mighty Aphrodite star and husband Christopher Backus are parents to three children- Mattea, 5, Johnny, almost 4, and Holden, 1 in June. The actress sat down with Parade to promote her latest flick, Multiple Sarcasms, and dished on her family life and her career.

On choosing family over career: "I don't want to take time away from my kids [two sons and a daughter with actor Christopher Backus.] I used to work all year long and basically live in hotel rooms. Kudos to women who can pull that off, but I don't want my kids raised by nannies. I have the best children and husband. I'm really, really blessed."

On her role model- her mother: "My mother was a stay-at-home mom. She was amazing, always there for us. Somewhere I guess there is a middle ground, but you see your kids suffer when you leave them with someone else. And I already feel this future sense of loss - they're going to grow up and go away and I'll be alone. I'm so attached to my kids that I even hate to see my daughter go on a playdate. Sometimes I'm like, 'Why don't you stay here with me?'"

Mira Sorvino Loves Raising Her Kids In New York City

Mira Sorvino Loves Raising Her Kids In New York City

Academy-Award winning actress Mira Sorvino has flown under the radar in the past few years while she raised her three children with her husband Christopher Backus. However, she's got several films in the works and a new one coming out today, Multiple Sarcasms.

Mira spoke to the New York Daily News about life as a struggling actress in New York City and raising her kids in the Big Apple.

On advantages of city life: "It's been great so far. I worried a bit because we tend to think of New York kids growing up really quickly and being supersavvy, maybe not in the healthiest way. But my children have wonderful friendships. They take terrific classes. They love their schools. So I'm not seeing any negativity so far."

On how motherhood has affected her acting: "It has revolutionized my life because I love my children so much. I'm a much happier person now that I don't really care about how big or small an actor I am. I'm very judicious when it comes to how much time I'll spend working, because I don't want to deprive my kids of my company and I don't want to have someone else raise them."
