Diana Krall is currently promoting her 12th album, Quiet Nights, an intimate recording of seductive ballads and Bossa Novas. The 44-year-old jazz superstar dishes about her 2 1/2-year-old twin sons Frank Harlan James and Dexter Henry Lorcan, life in Vancouver with hubby musical icon Elvis Costello, and what we can expect from her next in the latest edition of Canada’s own, Chatelaine magazine.
On life in Vancouver, Canada: “We love it here, we love Vancouver. He’s [Elvis] down at Ocean Park with the boys right now. We feel like part of the community. We have our neighbourhood and our friends. Elvis and I will go to this beautiful restaurant called La Regalade, a French bistro in West Vancouver. We just kind of settle into our place, where the owners know us, sit down with candles and we talk. You know, at this stage in life, it’s so easy to just get immersed in motherhood. It’s so easy to neglect your marriage in this scenario. We really make time with each other and nobody else. And when we get home, since the boys are going to sleep later, we see them off to bed and we watch a movie. And there’s your day.” Krall continued to say that getting to the park is a breeze: “There’s no planning really! In the end we work spontaneously. It’s more of a “Can you take the boys to the park?” Yes. “Okay I’ll do this.””
On multitasking and letting go of societal pressures to be supermom: “You know you can do it all, but you don’t always have to – and that’s okay. Sometimes I have dinner parties and sometimes I cook the whole dinner and that’s great. There are other times where, because I’m privileged to be able to ask for help, I have more time and more energy to give to my children. I think fatigue is your biggest challenge as a parent. You’re constantly tired and you’re constantly trying to keep up with things that seem simple. Your coping mechanism starts short-circuiting. The advice to keep in mind is just to sleep. Sometimes I don’t get off stage until one in the morning and then my kids are up at seven. I have to get up! Somehow, you have to find a way to balance that.”
Matthew McConaughey, dad to 9-month-old son Levi, says that yes, even celebrity dads get peed on from time to time. The Sahara star recently sat down to answer questions from readers of People magazine, dishing on everything from heartbreak to fatherhood to the secret to his calm and cool outlook on life.
On working with Jennifer Garner in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past: “I had a ball with Jennifer. She’s very elegant, yet sort of a classic woman, actress. She does her own thing, and she also doesn’t bring a lot of hoity-toity false drama to the process. But she’s also very sly and cunning and witty. She’s with it and she’s fun to work with. You might think you’re pulling one over on her, and she’ll flip it right around. She’s very keen and coy.”
On getting over a broken heart: “Oh yeah, I had my heart broken several times, especially growing up. It starts off with having a good mom who comes in, sees you’re heartbroken, lets you sit there for a while and then the next morning it was like, “Let’s get on with it! You’re going to get back out there.” She’d always tell us, “It was their loss.” It made us feel better. It got us back out the door. We were never allowed to stay around and sulk about anything.”
On changing diapers… and being peed on: “Yes! And yes! More than a few times to both. And [Levi] gets the joke when he pees on me. He laughs. He laughs his butt off! I think I am [good at changing diapers]. I could have a race-off with some other dads out there.”
