No Baby Talk For Neil Patrick Harris

There's a ban on baby talk in the Harris-Burtka household. Actor Neil Patrick Harris says that he and his partner David Burtka prefer to speak to their toddler twins Harper and Gideon like "regular people."
"My parents always talked to my brother and myself like we were regular people and not babies," the How I Met Your Mother star tells PEOPLE. "So I don't talk down to them in baby talk. I try to talk to them even though they can't speak the language yet."

Neil Patrick Harris says bringing up 15-month-old twins Harper and Gideon with David Burtka has made him more of a relaxed parent.
The How I Met Your Mother star tells USA Today, "I think to go with the flow more. You know, they're so mobile and unformed, and yet strong-willed when they're able to run and walk and smash things with their fists ... You can't have any hard edges -- both literally and figuratively. Because they'll just kind of do what they want. You learn from them and sort teach them as things happen, rather than in a hyper-structured way."

It's exhausting just thinking about Neil Patrick Harris' life. One minute the 38-year-old actor is hosting the Tonys, then appearing in his hit show How I Met Your Mother while at the same time being dad to one-year-old twins Harper and Gideon with partner David Burtka. The multi-tasker recently sat down with Parade.com to give us a glimpse into his busy life.
On his favorite thing about being a father: "I love watching them learn to understand language. And watching them interact with each other is fantastic. We're lucky that we have two because they always have a playmate and they get to learn complicated concepts like sharing and cooperation. They get to learn those things a little earlier because they're with each other all the time. Watching their minds tick is fun."

On deciding to have children together: "Children were always talked about, but there was a certain point -- when David was in L.A. and I was working on How I Met Your Mother, maybe season two or three -- when we both agreed that if we wanted to have kids, we didn’t want to do it super late in the game. We wanted our parents to enjoy the process and to be young and vibrant enough to throw a ball with them, or to chase them around without using a walker. That was the eternal game-changer -- now we rarely fight in the big ways. What’s the point? We’re in this for a major long haul."

How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris and his fiancé David Burtka were spotted enjoying a lunch date with their adorable 1-year-old fraternal twins Gideon and Harper in Sherman Oaks, Calif. on Wednesday (November 9).
After a bite to eat at the Marmalade Café, the foursome gathered outside for some casual chit chat. During their conversation, Little Harper was quick to entertain herself with Neil's sunglasses while Gideon continued to smile and laugh in David's arms.

On keeping a very big secret: "When we were filming the movie, [David and I] were about five or six months pregnant and we weren’t telling anybody. When the script came my way, we had just started that process, so it felt like good timing. It was certainly easy to film things like looking at an ultrasound photo and feeling what emotion that brings. It was a nice little secret moment."

Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka's nine-month-old twins, daughter Harper and son Gideon, are growing up fast and will be talking soon. Neil jokingly told Jay Leno that having the toddlers call both him and David 'dad' may be confusing, so they've come up with their own solution.
"This is a sore subject. Because we are two gentleman with children. And so we didn't know what to call ourselves," he said. "Daddy One and Daddy Two sound kind of strange...So David's 'daddy' and I'm 'poppa', just to differentiate."
