Michael J. Fox: We Chose To Raise The Kids Away From Limelight
| Mar 30, 2012 by JENNY SCHAFER |

Actor and Parkinson’s research advocate Michael J. Fox, 50, opens up about to PARADE about his longtime love Tracy Pollan, their four kids - Sam, 22, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 17, and Esmé, 10 - and coping with Parkinson's.
On raising the kids away from the limelight: “We made a decision really early on, before the Parkinson’s diagnosis, that we’d move back East. We’d just bought a house in Bel Air [Los Angeles], but we never moved into it. We had an awakening one day that we don’t want to raise our kids in an environment that’s largely show business and built on whose father had a bigger opening weekend. It seemed fraught with peril. New York seemed like a better bet. There’s much more variety in the people that they meet and the relationships they have [in New York]. It’s much more real. They don’t live in a bubble. And I know where my kids are all the time." He adds, "We have a responsibility to make sure that they’re good people, not destructive; that they’re contributors who don’t feel entitled. They’re good kids. I can’t imagine reading about them [in the tabloids].”

It's hard to believe that Michael J. Fox — the star we came to love on the family sitcom Family Ties — is about to turn 50! The beloved actor and inspirational father-of-four opens up to Good Housekeeping about his family, career, and coping with Parkinson’s.
On special moments with each of his kids: "Sam [who's now in college] and I would listen to music in the car all the time. I love music, and he'd be in the car seat...and say The Who was playing "My Generation." I'd point out, "Listen to this bass line." And he'd listen and then we wouldn't talk about it, but then he'd come home from school [years later] and say, "Can I get a bass? I want to play the bass." So with Sam, it's a lot of that kind of stuff, and talking about science fiction and computers.

| Apr 17, 2010 by JENNY SCHAFER |

We first loved him as Alex P. Keaton, the conservative teen in the 80s sitcom Family Ties. Now we love Michael J. Fox as a devoted family man - he's been married to actress Tracy Pollan for 21 years with four kids: Sam, 20, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 15, and Esmé, 8 - and advocate for medical research (he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991).
The beloved Back to the Future actor, 48, opened up to Reader's Digest about his new book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future: Twists and Turns and Lessons Learned, and some of his greatest advice.
On his best parenting advice: "Always be available to your kids. Because if you say, 'Give me five minutes, give me ten minutes,' it'll be 15, it'll be 20. And then when you get there, the shine will have worn off whatever it is they wanted to share with you. I've never gotten up to see something one of my kids wanted to show me and not been rewarded."
