Happy 12th Birthday Bindi Irwin!

Name: Bindi Sue Irwin

Date of Birth: July 24, 1998

Parents: Terri Irwin & Steve Irwin

Siblings: Robert Clarence (12/01/03)

Facts:

  • Bindi was born in Nambour, Queensland, Australia
  • According to her parents, her first name comes from the name of her late father's favourite female cocodile at the Australia Zoo, while her middle name is from the family's dog, Sui
  • Steve also claimed that "Bindi" is an Australian Aboriginal word meaning "little girl"
  • She has followed in her parents conservationist footsteps by starring in her own show, Bindi the Jungle Girl, as well as appearing on her parents' show The Crocodile Hunter Diaries and The Wiggles: Wiggly Safari
  • In September 2006, Bindi lost her father after he was fatally wounded by a stingray barb
  • In 2008, she won a Daytime Emmy Award as Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series, becoming the youngest performer ever to win the award

Quotes:
"Bindi is a remarkable little girl. There are times when she astounds me. I understand that if you don’t know Bindi, or if you have a child who has stage fright, then it might seem odd that she can walk out in front of a huge crowd and talk so well, but you have to understand, she’s been in front of crowds since she was born. Her birth was filmed. She’s been comfortable with cameras and filming her whole life. There is nothing abnormal about her life. The tooth fairy brings her money for her teeth when they fall out. We have Christmas like everybody else. She goes to school here at the zoo. We have a teacher, Miss Emma, who goes everywhere with us. Bindi likes Britney Spears, and she loves the pop star Pink. She's a normal kid." - Terry, on her daughter at age 8.

Bindi Irwin Takes On Film

Bindi Irwin Takes On Film

The apple does not fall far from the tree in the Irwin family. Bindi Irwin, daughter of legendary animal rights activist, Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, has already made her mark on television as Bindi the Jungle Girl, and is now taking her love for animals to film. The 11 year-old is starring in the newest installment of Free Willy. In the new film, the actress does not actually work with a real whale, reports PEOPLE Pets. Irwin shares, "We don't want to ruin the magic for the kids, but we didn't use a real whale. And I feel lost without animals!"

The new film Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove, which is released today (March 23) on DVD and Blu-Ray, was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa last year. Of the experience, Irwin says, "It was so much fun. I told my mom I'd love to do a movie one day, and when Free Willy came along, I said 'yes' right away." She adds, "They're not just action-packed family fun, but they really have a message. You can learn something from watching them."

The topic of using real animals for filming has become very controversial, with many celebs becoming involved in the fight for animal freedom. In a letter to Sea World, Inglorious Basterds star Eli Roth pleads with the adventure park owners to allow the wildlife in their parks to return to their natural habitat, after the death of a staff member working with an orca whale. The full letter on behalf of PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals,) can be found on Radar Online.
