Mary-Louise Parker's Kids Have The Acting Bug

Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker says her kids William Atticus, 6½, and Caroline "Ash" Aberash, 4, are already showing signs of taking after mom.

“My children are putting on shows all day long,” the 46-year-old actress says. “I have a stage in my home actually because I was tired of them using the coffee table and the dining room table. So all day long it’s, ‘Ladies and gentleman, turn off your cell phones.’"

Mary-Louise Parker On Fame & Bill O'Reilly

Perhaps best known as the pot-shilling mom on the hit show Weeds, in real life Mary-Louise Parker is a single mom to two adorable kids who are becoming increasingly curious about her controversial TV character. The 45-year-old actress recently chatted to Vanity Fair about Weeds, fame and the challenges of single motherhood.

On her Weeds fame: "I think it’s a little dangerous if you overvalue that kind of attention. My son has recently started to notice it. One time a lady came running up to me in the street and said, 'I love you! I love you so much!' And my son asked me later, 'Why did that stranger say she loved you?' That’s a very hard question to answer.... They know that my character on Weeds does something with drugs. So now I get questions like, 'What are drugs?' And I’m like, 'Well, it’s something that … people do.' It’s so hard! Sometimes it’s just easier to say, 'She does things that are really, really naughty.' Kids love to hear that. 'Oooh, like what?'"

Are Single Celebrity Moms A New Hollywood Trend?

Are Single Celebrity Moms A New Hollywood Trend?

It's no secret that it's hard to make a marriage work in Hollywood. Celebrity couples, try as they may to build a long-lasting union and a stable family life are more often than not torn apart by distance, work commitments, and constant media speculation and intrusion into their private lives.

More and more celebrity moms are becoming single parents, due to divorce, the untimely passing of their partner, or the decision to move forward with becoming a parent in their own right. Most recently, Sandra Bullock filed for divorce from Jesse James and adopted baby Louis Bardo; Halle Berry and boyfriend Gabriel Aubrey are fresh off their split and are now reportedly battling over custody of their daughter, Nahla; and Denise Richards was just granted full custody of her daughters, Sam and Lola with ex- husband, Charlie Sheen.

Here's a look at a slew of single moms who are raising children on their own.

Mary-Louise Parker & Son Chat Up Alec Baldwin In Washington Square

Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker, 45, and son, 5-year-old William Atticus, enjoyed a Thanksgiving walk through Washington Square in New York City yesterday (November 26) when they bumped into actor Alec Baldwin, 51.

Mary-Louise, clutching a branch and some leaves, and Alec recognized each other and stopped to chat before heading their separate ways.

The Fried Green Tomatoes actress is also mom to 3-year-old Caroline “Ash” Aberash Parker, whom she adopted from Ethiopia in September 2007. Willam’s dad is Mary-Louise’s ex-partner, Billy Crudup.

Recently the happy mom-of-two told PEOPLE that she’s learned a lot from her two children:

They really put you in touch on how little you know and how little you are capable of and much you are capable of. They are very humbling, children. I am more patient now. I've become much more patient.

Alec has a 14-year-old daughter, Ireland, with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

Mary-Louise Parker: "Becoming A Mom Is The Best Thing That's Happened To Me"

"Becoming a mom is the best thing that's happened to me," the 45-year-old Weedsstar told People at last night's 5th Annual Worldwide Orphans benefit gala in New York (October 26). Mary-Louise's son William, whose dad is her ex Billy Crudup, was 3 years old when she adopted Ash from Ethiopia in 2007. Looking back, she says that it was the "best decision I've ever made."

Mary-Louise Parker Talks About Her "Little Family"

Mary-Louise Parker Talks About Her "Little Family"

Thanks to Mary-Louise Parker’s perfect portrayal, her character Nancy Botwin on the Showtime hit Weeds has joined a select group of television’s most memorable moms. The self-absorbed pot-selling widow is a far cry from June Cleaver, of course. And she’s certainly a far cry from Mary-Louise herself, who tells Chatelaine magazine that her most important role these days is that of a doting mom to her two kids William, 5, and Caroline “Ash,” 2.

Reflecting on her own South Carolina childhood, the actress says, “My childhood wasn’t fun. My parents are amazing; I just didn’t come along at a time when there was joy.”

Now a single mom – she split from William’s dad, actor Billy Crudup, while pregnant and adopted Ash in 2007 – Mary-Louise seems set on filling her family with as much fun as she can. Case in point: She spent the morning of the interview building cardboard castles with the kids and then roasting marshmallows in the fireplace of their New York home, and arrived to meet the reporter covered in shiny, colorful stickers courtesy of her son.

“When I left today, he kissed my hand on both sides and made me promise not to take them off,” she explains.

At 45 years old, Mary-Louise is still a relative newbie to motherhood. Though she always knew she wanted kids, she's the first to admit that she wasn’t cut out to be a young mom, saying, “My early twenties? Forget it. That girl shouldn’t have had a child. She shouldn’t have even had her own mailbox.”

Though she seems a natural now, like most moms Mary-Louise says there is always room for improvement: “I have my little family,” she muses. “It’s not perfect. I wish it were more perfect. I always want everyone to have a good time.”

Mary-Louise Parker: I Always Dreamed Of Adopting

Mary-Louise Parker: I Always Dreamed Of Adopting

Ever since she was a little girl, Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker dreamed of adopting a child. The Emmy-nominated actress recently discussed her family of three with PEOPLE at a benefit for Worldwide Orphans Foundation. The 44-year-old single mother of 5-year-old William Atticus, her son with former boyfriend Billy Crudup, made her childhood dream a reality when she went to Africa with Worldwide Orphans and made Caroline Aberash, whom she calls Ash, part of her family.

On always wanting to adopt: "I would daydream about it all the time. I thought about the fact that there were children who didn't have anything, and I felt like I could help. It was something that weighed on me."

On adopting her daughter Ash from Africa: "It was something I did for the world and for my son and then for me. And when I say the world, I also mean my daughter. Once I knew her, she became part of that. But it's hard raising two kids as a single person. It's a lot of pressure."

On wanting a full-time partner to share the pressures of parenthood: "Sometimes, sure," says Parker, who has been single since her relationship with actor Jeffery Dean Morgan ended earlier this year. "I wish I could give them everything that was a perfect little family paradigm, but I can't. Honestly, I feel like that doesn't even exist, or at least I try to tell myself that when I am feeling bad about not providing it."

Mary-Louise Parker Covers More Magazine

May 18, 2009 by CAROLYN ROBERTSON

Looking back, Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker says she regrets going nude in the show's season finale. "I knew it was going to be on the Internet: ‘Mary Louise shows off her big nipples,' she says. The 44-year-old single mom to kids William and Caroline talks to More magazine about aging, dating, and the scene that got everybody talking.

On splitting with Billy Crudup while 7 months pregnant: “I’ve never commented on the situation, and I won’t because it’s not fair to my son. Who wins? No child can benefit in that situation. Your love for your child should eclipse any other feelings you have for another person.”

On dating as a single mom: “Some men are daunted by it, some are really attracted. I had someone ask, ‘Does this mean we can’t go out anytime we want?’ And I said, ‘Yes, that’s exactly what it means. It means you come fourth, ’cause it’s my kids, my job, my family.’ I don’t ever want to come first to anyone. It’s too much pressure.”

Mary-Louise Parker Urges People To Adopt

Mary-Louise Parker Urges People To Adopt

The 44-year-old mom of two tells Gotham magazine, “I remember being little and asking my parents if we could adopt. I just always was attracted to the idea, and I love what it says and I love what it means. There are millions of children in this world, and I think if you have the energy and the resources, then it’s something you should really look into.”

Mary-Louise adopted her daughter Caroline "Ash" Aberash from Africa in 2007. She also has son William, 5, from a previous relationship with actor Billy Crudup.

She’s become something of a sex symbol over the years, but Mary-Louise says that she is trying to teach her kids that beauty comes in many forms – going so far as to change a line in the book Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! from “dinosaurs pretty, dinosaurs ugly” to “dinosaurs pretty, some dinosaurs not as pretty as other people think they are.”

Kind of a mouthful, but a good message nonetheless!
